UEFIKJEK COMMIWKE .. .......Hi WINSTON GHUKCHILL SPEAKS COMMUNICATION Winston Churchill, as has. been his custom from time to time since the outbreak of this war, last Sunday addressed the peoples of the British Empire in characteristic fashion. At the.beginning of the war he,'knowing his own, evidently fe't that we British peoples would want above all else the truth about the ugly and dangerous situation in which we Irid placed ourselves, and that we had the courage not only to face the facts but the tenacity to face them out. ̂ And so he premised us nothing but blood and tears and sweat and d long war, which was enough to crack the morale of any other ixjople so steeped in pacifism as we had become, but which he knew was just what was required to awake us put of enemy-induced sleep and to send us racing like swarms of angry bees to the battle, lines. He has trusted us as no other British Prime Minister has ever dared trust his people, and as a result that trust has been reciprocated in such full measure as has never been accorded any of his predecessors. It iV a gPod thing that it is so. iFor the dictators now know that the voice of Churchill is not like theirs, that of a few men but the voice of the whole united British Empire, not boastful yet the more dangerous for its cold determination . to e n d the totalitarian menace once and for all. Only a short while ago Mr. Churchill told the Italian • people that, unless they rid themselves of Mussolini knd'his gang of cutthroats--that is all they are--he would tear their African empire into shreds. It sounded almost like boasting at the time, but events have proved since that the Prime Min ister was'merely giving the Italian people a last chance to escape from a destruction already prepared for them, which they were powerless to meet. To-day the avalanche has des cended, and soon there will be no more Italy in Africa. And who shall blame the Ethiopians and the Arabs and the other races who, have so suffered under the brutal Fascist if they then do as they have been done by ? It were ' neither just nor wise that the Italians in Africa shoulcl not pay . to the full the penalties for all their crimes. For the spirit of aggression, which is the spirit of Nazism and Fascism, is fed on violence, battens on violence, recognizes nothing but violence, and consequently oan only be destroyed by violence. One does not compromise with bubonic plague, which is not less danger ous to the life and happiness of humanity. . ' But, while Mr. Churchill spoke encouragingly on the good n e w s ^ of Africa, he-did^noM^wrget-bo-remind us that the# fight m s not yet won,, that we were probably on tl^ ' eve of the most deadly and decisive struggles of the whole war. It will ' have been noted tha t he referred to 1942 as a war year, foiv instance. Yet in . contradistinction-; to his former addresses there was a note of utter confidence in the final outconm suoh " as he has never quite allowed himself to express before. Previously he has promised that the Empire would s ta ^ such a last ditch fight as must bring yictory at the last. But on Sunday he concluded his message to President Roosevelt with : these memorable words, which will doubtless ^ho. pages of history: "Give us the tools and we will finish the job. .......
