The. biisiness depression has fallen to., a greater or less degree bn every community, and there are indeed few interests that have not suffered or^ in dividuals that have not been affected to some extent. It- Canada has borne the burden with other, countries, and while her Horn of Plenty has been over-flowing, her foreign markets' "have dwindled, resulting in serious un employment. However, the considered opinion, as out lined in the public press by students/, of international affairs, is that , we have passed the zero' hour, and that while a return.to normalcy may be gradual, we aire defin itely facing the road to better times. Certainly if a ghange in world conditions occurs for the better, Canada with her almost unlimited natural resources, should be among the first to feel the reaction, and more especially the Port of; Vancouver, because of her strategic position on the world's map. $I i! n i! )\ . g , V - »! n n n i Editor of The West Van News, Dear Sir: liermit me, as chairman of the West Vancouver B. P. 0. Elks Xmas Cheer and Relief Commit tee, to acknowledge the receipt of the large sum of $340.27, which was collected through the efforts of the West Van News. .Without your assistance it . would haye been impossible,. to have carried out our Xmas- Cheer and Relief to the extent w.e were able to do. On behalf of the committee I extbnd to you our sincere thanks. - While we feel ' more than '. grateful to all those who con tributed to this worthy, cause, and which; you have acknowl edged from time to time in the West Van News, I wish to make The y,ear 1931. is almost out, and for most nations its going will cause few regrets. It has been a twelve months filled with crises of all kinds, whieh have tested statesman-" ship and the wprld of business to the uttermost. Western civilisation is wracked b̂y inemployrnent and lack of business confidence, while the peo,. .es of Asia are in a daiigeroiis state of ferment. .There seem, however, to bo two bright siiots in the otherwise dreary retrospect, 'rhe first is the decision of Great Britain .1̂0 go off' the gold standard'and the probability ' of a hedge being placed round the Empire in the way of tariffs. which latter should .have...beon done, years ago. Thu second, as it seems to us, is the practical death of the League of Nations. The idea of such a league is altruistic in the highest degree, but it is a full thousand years ahead of its lime.. It could, only be effective in the age of the millenium, when busi ness competition shall have ceased, amLman desi^n o longer to have that which belongs to his neighbor, ^ t/h a s been ft'^pecial mention of the wonder- Jf . In West Vancouver we have every reason to feel that f we have been more than fortiffiktej and that the blessings. 4 of Nature have proven to be to our own material advan- I ■ tage. The accomplishments of the past are only the . |r foundation stones for others of equal importance which ' ' we hope will follow. The eyes of Greater Vancouver are 5|' now focussed on this Municipality as never before. Hav- . ing in mind recent conditions and uncertainties of the i- futurei, it would be futile to indulge^ in prophecies of too definite a nature, but in. West Vancouver, with no idle boast, we may feel proud of the past and face the future ;<» -With cheerful optimism. -. ' L . / J We have just-passed the Christmas season, and the spirit of good-will and helpfulness, so manifest among, our citizens, has been Jnspiiring. On behalf of myself and " myeolleagiies dh the Council, may I express the wish that the climmumty spirit of tolerance and good fellowship will continue among us during the coming year, that our ideals, enthusiasm and faith in this, beautiful munici pality wifi endure, and that when the joyous bells ring in the glad. New Year, 1932 will bring to'-alT our fellow ful spirit of qiir school children in contributing such- a large sum. Through their, efforts they have helped to; make life just a little sweeter-for those less-fortunate'. We are proud to know that the rising generation are fitting/themselves to be able to take up the'*burdens of re sponsibility in the near future. To them our heartfelt thanks. We also wish to express pur gratitude . to the Independent Labor Party of West Vancouver.,, for the amount of $50, being the proceeds of their mammoth whist drive, held especially for. Xmas cheer. 1 am sure they feel well repaid for the time and labor expended in view of the sunshine they have helped to spread this Xmas. season. To. them the committee extend their thanksT ~ responsible in the main for a number of abortive/national conferences which have broken up in confusion, and has given rise in the hearts of many stak'smen to a, feplipgpf confidence in the innate goodwill and-trus\ of peoples iii'each other which ■*> events have proved to be entirely unjustified. With - its extinction the world^will be able to face facts as they are' instead of following the far more dangerous chimera of what they ought to be, -- Although it is not generally our province as a community paper to discuss world conditions, it became necessary at this time to do so, because West Vancouver;" as virtuall.y a part-of Vancouver, has been adversely affected by the general depres sion. While in common with every other community weiiave; "' suffered and are suffering from the ills, of unemployment, the municipality has still, in spite of all diWbacks, continued to grow and make steady progrtsii. » . . ' Best.of all, of course, ivas the, consummation of the Holly- burn lands' dealT-the most important event in the history of the municipality, for as a resulf of it our future and our immediate future ,is assured. It has already saved us an an increase' in the tax rate next year, if not an improvement tax, and has placed the name of West Vancouver on the map of Canada if not of the world. During the year 1932 and the following four years the sum of $1,000,000 will be spent in our midst, and probably a much larger amount than that. It will bring in its train the construction of a First Narrows bridge, j I; .1 » r !; < If-..' 4- . and it will be very surprising if "this work is not started vsome tme in 1932. ̂ ^ citizens , a very hearty measure of happiness and pros-..............i-perity.- t J. B. LEYLA'ND, Reeve. THE OLD YEAR We also wish to make special mention of- the contribution of $116.45, which you have ack nowledged , through your paper, from the Ferry employees. It is 9 more than gratifying, to know that those who*are fortunateHn- having steady employment have not, forgotten those less for tunate and have to a degree The world generally in 1932 must face facts as they are, and then put their shoulders to the wheel. For us in We'sf Vancbuver-that should--not-be difficultT fory-whilo-we have endured a number of lean years in the past, it does look, as if the coming year will bring West Vancouver a larger measure of prosperity than its people have ever dreamed of. * M ■ MRS.
