CORRESPONDENCE Dundarave, Feb. 22nd. Editor West Van News: We, as ratepayers, think it is high time to try and keep West Van. work for West Van. men as far as possible. In the matter of the tenders for the school clearing it is rumored that all the difference between our local tender and the suc cessful firm was three hundred dollars, and in that case it would have been in the best interests of West Van. to give it to the local men. and save the relief money which probably will be paid out to some of our citizens. It certainly seems a raw deal and if there are other reasons or that we are not thoroughly convers ant with the facts we should like your paper to give them. We should also like to know how much interest our Council has in the Caulfeild Park roads as we find imported men working on that also. This is a serious mat ter for West Van. How are our workers going to exist if not given the work here (which is small anyway), being a young, growing place. We should like an Editorial on this from your able pen if you will give it con sideration. We deplore these facts very much as many of our families have been carried over for the necessities of life, especi ally wood and coal. Yours for West Van. Com munity, -- M. BULKLEY. HOME ECONOMICS Trouble-Saving Ideas Skimmed milk and water with a bit of glue in it, heated scalding hot, is excellent to restore old, rusty black Italian crepe. If clapped and pulled dry, like fine muslin, it will look as well, or better, as when new. Spots on furniture may usual ly be cleansed by rubbing them quick and hard with a flannel wet with the same thing that took out the color. The very best restorative for refacing varnish ed furniture is pulverised rotten- stone rubbed on with linseed oil. Tortoiseshell and horn combs last much longer for having oil rubbed into them occasionally. Sal volatile or hartshorn will restore colors taken out by acid. It may be dropped upon any garment without doing any harm. Spirit of turpentine is good to take grease spots out of wool len cloths, paint, etc., from ma hogany furniture, and to cleanse white kid gloves. Cockroaches and all vermin have an aversion to spirits of turpentine. A few potatoes sliced, and with boiling water poured over them, make an excellent preparation for cleansing and stiffening old rusty black silk. Gentleman Jim was polite to the last. New Library Books Since the war the output of hooks by Canadian authors has increased enormously. The old writers such as Ralph Connor, Gilbert Parker and Stephen Lea cock have more than held their own and many new novelists, bi ographers and essayists, such as Martha Ostenso and E. Barring ton have become world famous. While very limited in its ability to add new volumes because of the poor patronage afforded it by the people of West Vancou ver, the Hollyburn library has several Canadian books on its shelves. Three of the latest of these and Kipling's new volume have just been put in the library. Isabel Ecclestone McKay's" Blen- carrow" is a story of rural Ont ario, " of youth, love and life in the Canadian countryside." "Kennedy's Second Best" by John D. Freeman has its scenes laid chiefly amid the broad acres of the Alberta ranch-lands, al though some of its action takes place in our own Vancouver. In "Huldowget" B. A. McKelvie, well-known as a Native Son of British Columbia has written something new in Canadian liter ature and has used his intimate knowledge of the Indians of the North Pacific coast and of the missions there in a powerful story of love and superstition in conflict. We congratulate Mr. Charles Appleton on the completion of Appleton Court, the new apart ment building at the corner of Fulton and 17th. Appleton Court is the only " red seal" building in Canada, and as such is specially note worthy. But not for this alone is the structure interesting. It is one of the most completely equipped, convenient, and roomy apartment houses in operation. Inlaid hardwood floors through out, each of the four suites of which it is comprised are sup plied with a "frigidaire" freez ing appliance for making ice for the use of the tenants. Electri cal fireplaces, electric stoves, and in fact electrical fixtures for all branches of household use are installed. Coal, wood, and oil are entirely dispensed with. There are two flats on the ground floor and two immediate- Iv above them on the upper floor, each flat running the whole depth of the building from West to east. The front doors of the flats open on the central stair way, and a backdoor in each case gives egress to the yard in the rear. Each of the flats, which are of practically the same size, contains a large sitting room facing 17th Street, two bed rooms, bathroom and kitchen with breakfast nook. A splendid view of the bay and inlet is ob tained from each flat. The large basement, which ex tends the whole area of the build ing. contains laundry tubs and an automatic silent May burner controlled by electricity, which provides the necessary- heat for the flats. Eventually it is the intention to make a double tennis court in the grounds for the use of the tenants. Fat Lady (bathing) : Here, let go of my leg! Musical Society Many Towns and cities nowa days receive much advertising by the adoption of one or more of the arts and sciences. Our municipality would do well to foster the art of music. Among st us we have vocalists who have gained premier awards in open competition, worthy expon ents of the piano, violin, orches tral playing and musical comp osition. A choir of 80 voices, at the present time without doubt the premier choir of British Col umbia. A new departure, with in the last few weeks, a ladies' choir of 40 voices and a boys' choir of over 40. All point to a great musical future for West Vancouver. At the fall concert of the mus ical society only 200 paid for ad mission to the Hollyburn Thea tre. It is hoped that more ap preciation will be shown at the concert to be held on Tuesday, March 22nd, when a large and varied program will be present ed, excerpts from the oratorio of Saint Paul (Mendelssohn) by the choir, soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone and bass solos by members of the choir and do not forget they are your fellow- citizens and the flower of B. C. talent, and last but not least, two numbers by the Boys Chor us, their first appearance on any concert platform. They range in age from 6 to 14 years. It will be a great occasion for the embryo. Two old salts, who had spent moat of their lives on fishing smacks, were arguing about mathematics. Finally the captain of the ship proposed a problem. " I f you sold 126 pounds of codfish at 6 cents a pound," he said, " how much would you make?" Both men worked a while with pen cils and paper, but neither seemed to get very far. "Is it codfish they caught?" he demanded. "Yep," replied the captain. " No wonder I couldn't get an an swer!" exclaimed Bill in disgust. 'T ve been figuring on shad all the time."
