REiIARKA BLE SUCCESS Phone I'hone IVest 28 1) ~ GROCERY and HARDWARE AmblesIde Whimsical Review Over Five Hundred I'resent. Closing its autumn series of lectures devoted to the art of literature, the Vancouver Poetrv Society presented 11r. A. ilI. Stephen, of EVest Vancouver well-known poet and novelist, in recitals in the interests of Can- es, 1216 Robson Street, on Sat- urday evening. ilIr. Stephen has been absent from the city for most of the present year during which he has lectured and given decitals in the interests of Can- adian literature throughout the Dominion. By request, his read- ings were confined to selections from his unpublished work. Two five-act poetic dramas, four one act plays, two volumes of lyric poetry, and two narra- tive and dramatic poems of con- siderable length have been com- pleted by this author and will be added, in time, to his published work. A novel, it was announc- ed, ivill appear during the com- ing year. This story is "The Gleaming Archway." ilIr. Steph- en gave readings of dramatic sel- ections from "Kanikilak: The Wanderer" and from his poem celebrating the exploits of Ver- end rye, the explorer of the plains. The last named poem is the first by a Canadian author which embcdies the epic of west- ern exploration. The program included two pianoforte solos by iAIiss Nellie Harrison Howard. A Fair Question The teacher was giving the class a lecture on "gravity." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Now children," she said, "it is the law of gravity that keeps us on this earth." "But. please, teacher," inquir- ed one small child, "how did we stick on before the laIv was pass- ed?" The social evening and dance given by th IVest Vancouver Conservative Association was more largely attended than any social function which has been given in the district for years, over five hundred being present. The pavilion vras beautifully dec- orated with evergreens and flags while over the fire place were hung photos of Hon. R. B. Ben- nett and Hon. Dr. S. f. Tolmie. The evening started vith an ad- dress by Hon. Pat. iAIaitland, minister without portfolio, who spoke of the probability and the great desirability of Gen. A. D. ~IcRae's becoming the federal organiser. IIe stated that Hon. R. B. Bennett divas the greatest leader the Conservatives had had for many years. Reviewing the P. G. E. situation he said that Dr. Tolmie would follow the pol- icy laid down in his election man- ifesto, and would sell the road, if an advantageous price could be obtained, otherwise he ivould have it ccmpleted. Several dances followed, when Gen. A. D. ~IcRae,M.P., made a brief address. Referring to the reports in the press that he was to become the federal organiser, he stated thai, if the party were insistent on his doing so, he would accept, although person- ally he would prefer to stay quietly at home. As federal or- ganiser he would be all over Can- ada,and would perforce see little of his home and Vancouver. There were now a very large number of women voters, and he thought that in view of this there should be a number of wo- men i%I.P.'s in the house at Otta- wa. He had recently returned from a long trip in the Peace River country, and was more en- thusiastic than ever over its lat- ent possibilities. It was a dom- inion in itself, and had tremend- ous resources. Speaking upon the future of Marine Drive, he believed the federal govern- ment were restoring their grants to B. C. for certain trunk roads, by which they became respons- ible for 60 per cent of the cost of building and maintenance. )Vith the provincial govern- ment's subscribing the other fif- ty per cent., this would mean that the Drive would cost West Vancouver nothing in the near future, if, as appeat'ed likely, the road came under the federal grant as part of the road to Powell Rivet. After a number of other danc- es, Jack Loutet spoke for a feiv minutes, referring in glowing terms to the wotidet ful work General McRae had done in or- ganising the winnipeg conven- tion. It was the best organised convention ever put on by the Conservative party, and the lat- ter could not do better than ap- point Gen. ~IcRae as federal or- ganiser. Airs. Irene 5Ioody of Vancou- ver, divas also present and gave a short address. Following the speeches and re- freshments, dancing was carried on until 1 a. m., the floor being crowded every number as a re- sult of the excellent music pro- vided by Barry's six-piece or- chestra, which kept the large crowd assembled up and going. A very successful evening closed with the singing of the national anthem.
