Editor, Dear Sir: --Mr. ~lorgan sug- gests running busses to North Vancouver. It is a good idea, but I thing too risky, having those large busses running on such a narroiv roadivay. As compensation for withdraival of railway, ask the directors of the P. G. E. to condition the pres- ent railway track and make it suitable for a motor road. As it is already graded, it ivould not cost a great deal. Deck the bridges. and brace them. The decking would in itself strengthen the bridges enough for motor traf- fic. &Ve would then have a one-ivay road run west to EVhytecliff on Plarine Drive and east on the new road, avoiding congestion of traffic, as at present on i~larine Drive. The east bound road be- ing down grade to EVeston, would not be hard on a macadam or tarred road. At the Indian reserve, North Vancouver, ~ivitch on to the Es- planade and so avoid all curves, etc. Such a road as I mentioned before could be boulevarded and made beautiful. IVe read in British and Euro- pean papers of the millions of pounds spent in providing water- places, beaches and boulevards in seaport towns. Now is our opportunity to save millions of dollars for fut- ure generations by providing such a scheme. OUR BEACHES I consider our Reeve and Councillors are not looking to the interest of this municipality on this proposition, otherwise we should not see mentioned in the evening papers, the dredg- ing from the shoal being dump- ed into a 200 foot hole in the harbor, ivheii it could be placed on our beach'.s at very little cost. Must all ideas come from the Council chamber before action is taken, and must we sit dumb when a chance to speak in the best interests of our district, is brought to our notice? J. NYLAND. BANSHEE AGAIN HEARD i TEi E IVest Van had another boost this iveek when the hideous hoiv- ling banshee was heard on the Ambleside ivharf, and this after all the complaints about the same. The excuse offered for run- ning this hcivler is, that the creivs can hear it plain, quite so, but if you have no passengers you wont ivant crews, and people ivill not stand for anything like that, when there are plenty of other appliances that would ans- iver the purpose. Now folks don't think I am one of those EVest Van knockers. 4 I am one of West Van's biggest boosters, and I am still going to live here in spite of these incon- veniences, and help to put them right, if I can. Hoping I have not taken too much space in your paper Mr. Editor. Yours truly, A TAXPAYER. Xmas Cheer Fund A letter was received from George Hay suggesting that, noiv water neters had been in- stalled for business properti s, the question of charges be gone into, as the rate charged in )Vest Vancouver was out of all pro- portion to the amount of water used, and according to his in- formation more than double that charged by other municipalities. He was advised that an amend- ment bylaw now decided upon ivould shoiv a reduction in ivater and meter rates. 3lrs. H. L. Salter was inform- ed in reply tn her letter that the light at 12th and ~larine had been installed in error and for that reason had to be removed. A petition signed by Jas. Rus- sell and four others was received asking for a street light at the corner of 30th Street and illarine Drive. They were advised that their application had been re- ceived too late for attention this season, but that it had been placetl on th light file for con- sideration when additional street lights are next ordered installed. The reports of the engineer on the Marine Drive fences and dry walls and on a culvert at 17th and Haywood were referred to the incoming council. The engineer reported on: 1. The Greater Vancouver EVater Board's operations to which their attention had been draivn by T. Dodson. Drilling was proceeding in the Second Canyon of the Capilano, also all over the lower valleys of the Seymour and Capilano rivers for the purpose of collecting data forivater supply. Test holes only had so far been driven. Further action was undetermined. A letter ivas ordered sent to 41r. Dodson with this informa- tion. 2. Fences and dry walls on i~larine Drive. An expenditure not to exceed $60 ivas authorised on fencing mile 10. The remain- der of the estimate amounting to $ 140 was referred to the in- coming council. 3. Neiv building by-laivs, rec- ommending same to be typed. An expenditure not to exceed $30 was authorised. We are glad to acknowledge receipt of the following dona-tions towards the Christmas Cheer fund organized and ar- ranged by the AVest Vancouver Elks. colonies so collected ii ill behanded to the B.l'.O.E. to aug- ment their own fund. IVe shall he glad to receive donations from any of our readers. no matter how small the amount. This fund will close tomorrow (Saturday) night and any de- sirous of making contributions should leave them at our office or mail to the IVest Van News by that time. P. kkpleehan Ec Co. wrote the council asking what had been done as regards the question of the cutting of timber on Lot 1147 previously brought up by them. They ivere advised that their letter had been forwarded to the solicitor, the matter being in his hands, ivith a request for a reply, which, when received, would be forivarded to them. A letter was received from the )Vest Vancouver branch of the Canadian Legion, stating they ivere desirous of building quart- ers for themselves, and asking whether the council would con- sider letting them have Lot 1, Block 3, D. L. 775, being tax sale property, on a long lease or other ferms. The council replied they were in full sympathy with the Legion's desires, but that it ivas first necessary they be informed ivhat kind of a building would be erected and what purposes it would be put to, this information being necessary in connection ivith the municipal by-laivs. A notice was ordered sent to Miss Christison that the munici- pality requires possession of the premises knoivn as the 25th St. )Vharf bath house on 6th July, 1929. The Canada Permanent Trust Co. was advised in reply to their letter that no agreement had yet been entered into between the municipality and F. Bus- combe, although a committee of the council had reported meeting him on the ground, and that the chairman of the board of works and the engineer would shortly interview Richards, Akroyd Gall regarding the proposed land transfer to Mr. Buscombe, to effect ivhich the aid of the Caul- feild estate ivas required. A letter ivas received from the B. P. O. Elks, No. 43, conveying their thanks for the kind don- ation toivards the Christmas Cheer fund and assuring them that the money ivould be judici- ously spent. 4. Culvert 17th and Hay- wood. The cost of a Pedlar cul- vert ivould be $75, and a cedar culvert $32. The matter ivas re- ferred to the incoming council. A letter was received from the fire inspector of the Department of Lands, Forest Branch, Van- couver, enclosing a report on the North Shore EVatersheds for 1928, and advising that AVest Vancouver's proportion of the fire patrol expenditure bill ivas $31.46. The bill ivas ordered paid. A letter was ordered filed from Captain lan Mackenzie, II.L.Arp ivhich he had written in reply to the council's letter enclosing a resolut1on d caling with the Howe Sound project and assur- ing them that the matter would have his very careful attention. The next regular meeting of the council will be held in the council chamber of the municipal hall at 7.30 p. m. on Friday, 28th December, instead of on ~londay 31st December. ilOTOR REGULATIO:yy S ENFORCED IN PACIFIC COAST CITY Bert Ridley, ivriting from Port- land, Oregon, to his father, A. J. Ridley, states that in thee days in that city 1500 motorists were fined for violation of minor traf- fic regulations. This shoivs just hoiv strictly motor regulations are being en- forced in the Pacific Coast city. SPECIAL AVINDOiV DISPLAY IN REAL ESTATE OFFICE The chairman of the AVater- works and the Solicitor were deputed to interview the inspec- tor of municipalities at Victoria on the proposed waterworks By- law and report. ROAD BY-LAiV RECEIVES FIRST READING Road reconstruction money by- law No. 400 for $60,000 received its firs& reading at last i~londay night's council meeting. This by- laiv, ivhich will come before the electorate next January, is for the construction of side roads in the municipality. iVATERAVORKS BY-LAAV BEFORE COUNCIL Receives First Reading By-law No. 401 for the Broth- ers Creek waterworks recon- struction came before the coun- cil on Monday night and receiv- ed its first reading. This by-laiv ivhich will be voted on next month, calls for an estimated ex- penditure of $ 150.000. It is not often that a real est- ate agent's windoiv calls for special remark, but ive must compliment Percy Bloiver for the very attractive and original ivindoiv display in ~lr. George Hay's office for ivhich he is re- sponsible. Apart from the at- tractive and artistic layout of a ivinter scene, there is a central illustration exemplifying the suitability of giving a building lot as a Christmas present. The windoiv is ivorthy of special not- ice. ~lrs. J.
