Once again old Father Time with his relentless scythe hasmowed down the days, the weeks and the months and thefestive season of Christmas is upon us. Once again man ap-proaches nearest to the Divine by exhibiting the greatest ofall attributes of Divinity--Love. Love for his fellow man.Love made manifest in his attitude of cheer, good will, friend-liness, kindness and charity. Once again the Truth of PoorRichard's saying becomes vindicated, "To the man of goodconscience each day is a continual Christmas day." Once againwe see happy mothers and happy fathers, hand in hand withtheir little dnes going to see toyland and Santa Claus--thatperennial and most beautiful myth in this mundane world ofours. Once again we see happy fathers and mothers, ladendown with many parcels, tokens of great joy and happinesson Christmas morning for the little people at home. Onceagain we are devoutedly able to thank the Benign Providencefor the wonderful blessing of children, in whom we are con-tinually renewing the days of our own childhood. Once againwe can truly experience the meaning of the old saying "SIan isbut a child of a larger growth" by the pleasures we grownups take in the happiness of our children. Once again we canbe truly thankful for the measure of health, happiness and prosperity that has been accorded to us, and truly sympathisewith those less fortunate who have had to bear the burden ofmisfortune, sickness, or the loss of loved and dear ones, know-ing that with each recurring Christmas tide the grief shallbecomes assuaged and the vacant chair less noticeable. Once again as a commuity we can be thankful for the goodhealth, progress and general prosperity of. our Municipality, that we have had no epidemics to decimate our little popula-tion, that there is not wide spread impoverishment in ourmidst, and that the constant movement of our Municipal bar-ometer is in an upward direction. Once again we can all unitein lustily singing the old, old Carol "Let every man be jolly, Each room with ivy leaves is drest, And every post with holly; Now all our neighbors'himneys smoke And Christmas blocks are burning; Their ovens they with bak't meats choke And all their spits are turning." Once again the time is opportune for those of us who haveour Dickens to take him down from the shelf and to read tothe children that wonderful Christmas story 'Scrooge'nd toour grown ups that delightful picture of a truly British Christ- mas Tide as depicted in Farmer EVardell's Christmas Partyin Dingley Dell. He occupietl the chair from the starting of the society in 1913 till his e»- listment foi ovet seas set vice and his period of office was mai ked by unfailing attendance and suggestive contributions to the discussions. On Thursday evening the chair was taken by Nr. Duncan, the vice-president, who introduced Nr. Mackay in a speech of pleasant reminis- cence. Mr. Mackay's address was on "The Literature of Life," and dealt with the subject chief- ly from the point of view of the poets of contemplation. He shoiv- ed the strength and earnestness of the appeal made by these poets when they dealt with the successive phases of life. There was a wide-spread tendency to drop the poets when youth was past; but it was well worth while when the experience of life had begun to widen and deepen our views of it, to go back and see what the poets had said with ~ such force and truth. These poets had also heartening mes- sages for later years, calling up our own happier memories anrl our moments of vision, and en- couraging us to steady persever- ance instead of unmanly yield- ing to hopelessness for the fut- ure of the world. The speaker. illustrated his points by read- ings from the poets, and ended on a high plane of moral appeal. The discussion was shared be- tween three of the original of the society,--Mr. Lawson, the chairman, and the editor; and the proceedings ended with a cordial vote of thanks to Mr. Mackay.
