HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ORATORICAL CONTEST AND PLAY The finals of the oratorical contest nnd 8 one-nct play, given last Friday evening by the high school students under the aus- pices of the )Vest Vancouver P.- TA., wns thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience who filied the Inglcwood Auditorium. The young orators in the con- test which occupied the first part of the evening all did remark- ably well, the delivery nnd dic- tion of each being excellent. Mary Brndshsw won the first prize, the second going to Geral- dine Johnson nnd the third to Oliver Burbridgc. The judges were Miss E. G. Hnrrop und hfngistrnte Gordon Robson while hfrs. William Blair presented the prize. The ons-nct comedy, "Ici on Parle Francis" wss well put on by the students taking part, more especially in view of the fact that only two weeks had been spent in its preparation. No prompting wns necessary, snd each of the caste entered into the spirit of the play in 3 wny which held the attention of the audience nnd kept them 8- mused from the rise until the fall of the curtain. hIontion should also be made of the very pretty stage setting, for which J. E. Durbin was responsible. J. R. Mitchell acted ns chairman of the evening, the play being dir- ected by him snd Lesiie Brookcs. At its conclusion 3 bouquet was presented to Miss Lulu Rsy, who took 0 leading part. Miss D. M. Jones hss moved from 13th nnd hiarine Drive into 0 house at 1070 Kcith Road. SIVIihihIING CLUB SPLASHES The Swimming Club executive have drawn up their program of activities for the coming sea- son and are launching out into new fields. Owing to the num- ber of competitive trophies the club now owns, the Dundarave Regatta hss grown into too big sn event to be properly staged in one dny. The club have,there- fore, decided to hold two galas this summer. The first will take place, it is expected, on, July 22nd at Dundnrave, and will be devoted entirely to the younger members of the club. Competi- tors in this gals must not have passed their sixteenth birthday. Besides the usual club events, several humorous skits are to be staged. The School Relay races will also be included in this program of events of which more later. The Second Gala, tentatively dated for August 6th, will be the Seventeenth Annual West Vancouver Regatta and will be the tribute of the Swimming Club to the hIunicipslity of West Vancouver upon reaching its twenty-first birthday. It will feature twelve Pacific North IVest Outdoor Interna- tionai Championships for which permission hss already been re- quested from the C.A.S.A. at Montreal. This is the first time an outdoor International Pacific North West aquatic meet will have been staged. The Club's executive however, have always tried to make each succeeding regatta better than its predeces- sor nnd if successful in acquir- ing the right to stage this one, they will have certainly lived up to their reputation. This gals will also embody the senior clos- ed events which have heretofore been included in the annual re- gatts. The Club have also secured the services for the season af Coach Percy Norman, who needs no introduction to West Vancou- ver, nnd who has already map- psd out 3 big program of work by organizing systematic coach- ing classes for the club mem- bers. Mr. Norman, who was President of the Vancouver A. S.C. for several years, is prob- ably the best known conch in British Columbia. There will be no additional cost to members to svaii them- selves of these coaching services. The success of the Club'0 pro- gram will rest largely with the response to the membership drive which ls now under way. Maurice Anderson is chairman of the membership committee snd membership tickets can be procured from him or from any member of the executive.
