I'orter We were recently told of a scheme of Empire study which is being arrange&l for by the local Chapter of the I.O.D.E. I trust that I may be permitted to make a suggestion which should be useful, and which at any rate may be the means of enlisting the services of mem- bers who cannot handle subjects of wide scope. Those who have been born in small towns or rural parishies in the old country, or whose par- ents came from such places, sre often in a posi!Jon to write in- structive and interesting papers on parish geography and history from 16 to 30 minutes in length. Nothing elaborate is needed in the way of illustrution. From live to ten picture post cards csn be pinned up around the wall. The sheet of the Bartholomew map containing the parish csn be got for about 50 cents; snd it will be easy to make s sketch msp from it in heavy blue pencil on 8 sheet of building paper, all minor details being left out. No money need be spent on books like those of H. V. Morton. Something much more thorough is I&quired for parish geography but it can be got with a little perseverance. A careful study of an old country parish or small town can be made interesting to the most highly educated audience. But it must be written. The word hss far too much of slov- enly extemporaneous. To the writer of such 8 study, it will often prove s more useful men- tal discipline than many s sum- mer course at s university. Mr. Ysm- ago of Port Hsney, spoke on "The Founding of Msnchukuo." Mr. Yonemurs of Vancouver, spoke on "Japanese Intervention in Manchuris." He dwelt on the heavy capital investments of Japan in Msnchuris, the inse- curity owing to the lack of stable government in China snd assert- ted that China hsd defaulted on treaty agreements with Japan, snd he justified Jupsnese inter- vention on these grounds. In answer to questions snd criticism he boiled the argument down to the fact that Japan is over-populated and must find room to expand or many of its people will die of starvation. The Japanese realize this and are de- termined to persist in their pres- ent paficy in the face of world- wi&le opposition because they prefer to die fighting than to face the probability of death by starvation. The next Open Forum will be held at the Socialist Hall, 1453 Marine Drive on Sunday, April 2nd, at 8 p.m. when Mr. A. M. Stephen will speak on "The Basis for 8 New Social Order."
