THE BURiVINiG BUSH By Subadar In old London they are trying out a new system which has for its object the elimination of the wsllfiower. It consists in a man dancing with two women st the seine time, one of whom stands behind the other and each facing the man. The situation thus cre- ated would seem to bristle with diificulties. One wonders how in the average crowded ballroom the unwieldly mass thus crested could be steered with sny accur- acy, and what would happen when two such masses crashed to- gether. A pilot's certificat for the msn seems to be indicated. Then English girls must have grown much thinner since I knew them, and the men must have developed arms as long and strong as apes to be able to en- circle two wsists at the same time and whirl them around. One fears that the shoulder seams of the tuxedo or dress coat will never stand the strain. And how about the question of which lady is to take the out- side position? One seems to see ructions all over the floor at the beginning of the flrst dance over this knotty question with sll the fair sex retiring to the dressing room in tears and tatters to the accompaniment of the National Anthem. There are seventeen stoppages in s Lewis gun, and the above sre a few of the stop- pages that occur to one when re- viewing this tugboat method of dancing. The ladies can doubt- less think up quite a number of others. There was a great outcry after 1918 against secret diplomacy and as open diplomacy is mostly impossible in serious national questions, that meant diplomacy of sll kinds was taboo. It suits Japan'0 book. She says I want this or that, and I'm going to take it, or I have grabbed this or that and it's a ease of keep- ings. Her retention of the man- dated Pacific Islands gives her with her fleet a very favorable strategic position for the control of Austrslssian and Far Eastern hiarch 9, 1933. Whatever the tangle, it is evi- dent that Britain ls going to stay out for a while, and let someone else, probably the U.S., do the the scrapping; nor is any mem- ber of the League going to burn its finger to help that body sur- vive longer. Speaking offhand, it rather looks as if two repub- lics are due for s very hot time, in fact, the waters of the Pactfic may boil to such a point that we msy have quite 0 tropical clim- ate here by next winter. A large number of Oxford students recently put themselves on record that under no circum- stances would they fight for their country, thus possibly un- consciously solving the enigma of why Oxford the last few years has put up such a poor showing against Cambridge in sll lines of sport. The old Oxford student held his university's and his country's honor high, and he was 0 credit to both, while the present students or many of them are apparently most con- cerned for the safety of their skins. As a matter of logic, the man who refuses to fight for,his country when that country is st war has no right to its protec- tion, and, if he is consistent, he will leave it. Everywhere else except in the Empire and the U.S. he does so, either voluntar- ily or by the firing squad.
