There are many commercial fertilizers on the market, some of which are not entirely suited to roses and really do more harm than good. For light gravelly soils, cow manure should be used while for heavy soils the uec of horse manure is recommended. In both cases, it should be well rotted and not contain too much strawy material. The manure should be freely mixed with the soil at the bottom of the rose bed and in addition n large hand- ful of bone meal should be added just before the final layer of soil is put in place. The fertilizing of established rose beds is important. The first season after planting, the roses should receive very little additional fertilizer and certain- ly none at all before the first crop of blooms. After the first blooms are over a little liquid manure may be poured on the soil around the plant. The liquid should be quite weak. For roses that have been planted more than a year an an- nuai dressing of partly rotted manure should be dug in around the plant in the falL By spring it will have rotted and the rains will wneh it down eo that it will be available for the plant as soon as spring growth starts.
