The total distribution includ-sf ed about 97,527,000 eggs, fry,'nd fingerlings of the British Columbia sockeye salmon (On-6 'orhynchusBerks) snd 21,460m 000 eggs, fry, and fingerlings of the Atlantic salmon. or Sslmo sslsr. Different quantities of "- the eggs, etc., produced by one or two other varieties of salmon and several varieties of trout made up the remainder of the -'? distribution. Preparatory to next season's ' ',+') distribution, collection of eggs from parent fish has been in pro- e.'. grass for some weeks past at dif- I'! fercnt hatcheries, both east snd west. that are conducted by the department'0 Fish Culture Branch, which carries on federal .. fish culture activities. At some vi of the plants the collection work has been completed, elsewhere it ';-? will be finished shortly. The . g~g eggs thus obtained by collection @P operations are placed in the "r'atcheriesand either allowed to hatch out or to reach only the l "eyed" stage, for in some cases --though not many--it is desir- able that "eyed" eggs be planted while, in other cases, fry or fingerlings sre best for distribu- ", tion purposes. In the 5faritime Provinces ) 8this autumn parent salmon were impounded by the branch in re- taining ponds on the Margaree, tn Nictaux, Phillip, snd Sackville Vs Rivers in Nova Scotia, the Mira- vv(~2, michl, Restlgouche, and St. John Rivers in New Brunswick, snd the Morell in Prince Edward Is- land, nnd at the proper time they were stripped of their eggs 2P"'ndmilt . The fertilized eggs are now in various Atlantic hatcheries where they will de- ';-. velop during the winter. In British Columbia egg col- lection wss completed some time vk ngo at Pitt River snd Pemberton in the Fraser River watershe(j. It was also satisfactorily ut~ way at some eight other points,sa. ~t including places on Vancouver P~™ j Island, at Rivers Inlet. and in the Fraser and Skeena water- sheds, Some collections wsa also 'adeat Cultus Lake where 0 special study of sockeye salmon propagation is in progress. new; there are clever finger willing and waiting for the work to do. Hand-made stockings and ten- nis socks outlive the shop ones every time; birthday and wed- ding gifts are needed occasion- ally and in times like these gifts are better to be useful as well as ornamental, quite a few people who can do the finest work, can find no market for it at present. To help these, it is planned to hold three sales of home-cooking and handicrafts during Febru- ary, March and April when goods made by local residents will be offered for sale The sales will take place at the Clachsn, thanks to the generos- ity of Miss Stevenson, the first to be held on Friday, February 17. Those workers intending to offer goods for sale are asked to communicate ivith Mrs. Bernard Hayes, West $18LI, or Mrs. E. C. Bolin, West 156X. Another Help The Executive of the Associa- tion have under advisement s spring garden and allotment scheme, more of which will be heard about later, snd which should prove of inestimable value to the citizens. Thanks! To those people whose gener- osity wss further stirred by the need for butter snd eggs. Some of each were donated last week and in one case at least s prom- ise of s pound of butter each week. Also, another week end parcel of meat hss been off'ered. The wash boiler, too, arrived. This is splendid. Please I There are no pairs of men'5 pants at Headquarters now, and it is very distressing to have to refuse those who need them. The need will be realized when it is known that a worker was obliged to take home a pair of white ilannels to dye them blue to meet one case. A great many men have been without under- wear during these past weeks for the same reason, none on hand. The exchequer too, is in its usual state of disrepair, for as soon as the cash comes in it is needed for boot repairs etc A mother who could do some sewing but has no machine, would appreciate the use of one. If it could not be donated, per- haps there is one lying idle somewhere, which could be lent for a time? IVEI.FARE LAUNCHES NEIV SCHESIES OF SERVICE/ In order to form s connecting link between those having jobs to give snd those who need to do them, and those who have the wherewithal to buy with those who have the ability to make and need to sell, a new committee has been formed which will deal specifically with this work. A Few Suggestions With the passing of the snow, so many jobs will be looming up that need attention, the gardens will look unkempt, the gutters will need attention, a few shing- les here and there, a little out- side painting, the wood pile will be in sorry shape after the spel! of cold snd vvet snd more must be bought and stacked. So many things will need attention out- side, just little jobs, but so nec- essary. So much for the outside, but what about when the sun shines in and shows up the faded wall- paper, the shabby curtains, the general need of a brightening up all through. The housewife will be glad to have a little extra help to sec her through, or, hav- ing been shut in with the chil- dren all the winter, sho may like to have a few evenings free to go to places with her husband. Many women snd girls will be so glad to earn s litle for to have even a small amount of cash in the hand means so much these days. It seems difficult to realize but it is nevertheless true that many people in West Vancouver today cannot buy s packet of hairpins, a haircut, 0 bottle of necessary medicine, get their own boots re- paired, to ssy nothing of a bit of tobacco or a newspaper, note- paper or stamps. Even if they are supplied with municipal re- lief, that only means food, and many are not even eligible for that. Most homes where there is anything coming in at all can give an occasional job, even if not 0 big one, and those who can snd will are asked to regis- ter at once. SVhst To Do Those who have jobs to give and those who would like to do them are asked to telephone Mrs. Cromsr Bruce at West 145L who will keep a register, snd en- deavor to find the right people for the right jobs. Home-Cooking, Sewing, Etc. Some peopk sre expert bread and biscuit makers, snd some people love to buy it; Now and again even in these days, a few parties are given, and among the citizens are experts in plea, cakes, etc. A good deal of clothing will need to be made over this year, which would in normal times be discarded for Veal and Ham Pie I ((5 lbs. veal 2 hard cooked eggs (2k lb. ham 1 tabkspoon flour 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1 teaspoon powdered herbs Salt, pepper, red pepper snd mace to taste I tablespoon chopped parsley Pastry or biscuit dough. Mix on plate the flour, salt, pepper, red pepper, mace, powdered herbs, and lem- on rind, roll each piece of veal in this seasoning, and lay in deep casserole, alternately, layers of veal, ham, and eggs cut in slices; pile this in centre of the dish, add one cupful of water and parsley, cover with dough and bake in hot oven for 172(q hours. When baked, add 8 little well- seasoned stock. Serve hot or cold. 1 evad&ee Lost Agam "What's this, honey!" said hire. Yeeagbride'4 husband as he speared e slab from the dixb. "Lucifer cake, dear." "I thought yee said yeu weve go- ing te make angel cake." "I wsx, but it fell." "That last thing you sent in was good," said the editor. "We sll enjoyed reading it very much." "Well, in that case," said the youthful poet, "I take back what I said in the letter I wrote you yesterday about my determina- tion never to send you any of my work again." The editor slowly shook his head. "Don't do that," he mur- mured; "why, that letter is what I referred to!" The earnest local organizer called at the home of one of the villagers. "Ah, Mr. Jones!" he said."I'e called to ssk if you'l sing at the concert we are holding next week in aid of the hospi- tals. What kind of a voice have you?" "Well," returned Jones, with little enthusiasm, "I'e got what you might call an electric voice." "And what kind of a voice is that?" asked the puzzled vis- itor. "When you hear it you'l have a shock," came the reply. After Jane, the parlormaid, hsd admitted the simple-looking young man into the house for the sixth time in a week, the girl went to her mistress. "Madam," she said. "I want to give you s week's notice." The mistress of the house looked puzzled. "But Jane," she said, "this is very sudden, isn't it? Have you a good reason?" "Yes, madam. I can't bear the sight of that simple-faced young mah who calls to see your daughter Doris," Jane explained. He mistress smiled tolerantly. "But, Jane," she exclaimed, "the young man doesn't call to seo you, so why should you worry?"" I know he doesn'," said the maid; "but that's not the point. The maids in the other houses think he does." A woman wes having the upper rooms of her house painted, asd she fancied that the painter wes siaekiag on the iob.
