Up to date we don', know how badly China and Japan have suf- fered, but we do know it has given the death blow to the League of Nations. It was the first real test of the power of this last well-meaning debating society, and it has proved to be just what every student of Int- ernational afl'airs knew it must be, a dismal failure. It is the answer to certain professors, who have been criticizing our Ottawa governments for sending old men whose dsy was past as delegates to the League Assem- bly. Our Ottawa representatives being practical men of aifairs, knew what the League amount- ed to, while the profozsors, liv- ing in s world of theories, only knew what it ought to amount to. And that is quite a different thing, the millenium not having arrived. Canadians have of late been much bothered by the eruption in their midst of hec- toring professors and beach pyjamas. It is to be hoped that hence- forth they will both stay put under cover. Canada would also do well to cut out the delegation to Geneva altogether, and to spend the money where it can do some good, that is, on relief. A poem appeared in the Van- couver press the other day taken from the New York Times. It read as follows: ANGER Be reverent before the honesty of anger. A lie is a frozen sword in the wars that liars wage; A lie is bland and cool and is not uttered in fury: But truth is blurted forth upon the trumpets of rage. I have been very "reverent before the honesty of anger," more particularly on the oc- casion when a good sound thrashing "loomed"--a favorite word with headline writers -- at the hands of my outraged mas- ter, glued to his chair with bees- wax, but otherwise up and com- ing.. I remember even now that it was ten of the very best from "little Benjamin, our rul- er" and not "calm and peace" that erased his "distorted lip and brow." Further, most of us know that a first lie is often bland and cool, but a second lie, exploded by a liar caught oui to bolster up the first, is apt to be among the more angry utter- ances. in the HOLLYBURN THEATRE ELECTION ISSUES AB Candidates for Municipal Honors are Cordially Invited. "If we are to survive; a more economical administration is necessary." 30HN TURNER WATT CANDIDATE FOR REEVE Coohdge has gone west quiet- ly, as he lived. He was physical- ly and mentally the typical small New England farmer, only ar- rayed in s business suit, and I always pictured him in Puritan dress snd steeple hat. No scan- dal ever smirched his name, and he spoke very little, both of which things many politicians might mmember more often. Most important of all and in common with all the American presidents who have survived their terms of oifice, he knew how to efface himself gracefully after having held the highest position in the gift of his nation, and it takes a man to do that. Msy he rest in peace! VITAL STATISTICS District registrar of vital sta- tistics reports that during 1932, there were recorded in the three North Shore municipalities 218 births, 140 deaths and sixty-two marriages, ss against 187 births 182 deaths and sixty-two marri- ages in 1931.
