Hillis Wright Next Sabbath the minister will have as his subject the func- tion of memory "Remembering, Forgetting." In the evening, Satan's Ques- tion, "Doth Job Serve for Nought?" The Sunday School picnic to Stanley Park was a most enjoy- able one, the day was everything that could be desired, snd the children were out in strength snd in high spirits. Over two hundred took the op- portunity to revisit Stanley Park again. Members of the High School Band lent their services, contributing music on the wsy to the park and return, The parents provided abund- ance of food that undoubtedly added to the day's success, Swimming and racing nnd other games were indulged in by sll the young people until the evening, when all returned hap- py but tired. A great deal of the success of the dsy was due to the untiring eiforts of Sunday School Super- intendent Harrison, who watch- ed over everything to see that sll ran smoothly. All who were there voted the dsy the best ever. A meeting of sll senior young people connected with West Van- couver United Church will be held in the schoolroom immedi- ately following the regular church service on Sabbath even- ing, July 31. Dear Sir:-- The Reeve and Council have been considering the further im- provement to Ambleslde Park with s view to making sn Ath- letic Ground where the youth of West Vancouver msy develop their muscles in the field of sport. The chief item, of course, is the clearing and constructing of s track for running, snd it is hoped that a 440 yard circular track msy be possible. The field is rather narrow to allow for this, but there is lots of length which will be all the better for short distances, snd should not greatly handicap the distance events. A small deputation wait- ed on the Council to thank them for their action and instructions have been issued through the Parks Committee who will co- operate with the Board of Works to see what can be done immed- iately. In this connection, it is point- ed out that several West Van- couver young men are in train- ing for the Junior Olympic Sports to be held at Hastings Park on August 29th. Through the kindness of Mr. Macaulay of 16th and Esquimslt, they are be- ing taken to Mshon Park three nights a week where under ex- pert coaches snd trsiners they sre being rounded oif in the var- ious events which will be staged at that time. J. hiacEwen, C. Stewart, and Archie Miller, all from North Vancouver, are giv- ing of their time snd experience to make the very best of the tal- ent which hss come along very nicely in the past month. There is no doubt that entries will be available for sll the events. West Vancouver should have no difficulty in being represented in such events as the sprints, the 1 mile, the pole vault, broad jump, discus snd weight putting. The elimination will take place a- bout the middle of August, and the entries who csn make the standard will compete in another elimination to be held at Hast- ings Park previous to the main events on the 29th. With the active support of the West Vancouver Council, and the interest of the several cit'zens who are concerned about the physical welfare of the young men snd women of the Munici- pality it will not be long before they will be abk to use their own grounds for their activities. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week the 1st 3rd and 6th, the training will take place at the Ambleside Park at 7:16. All interested should turn out to encourage the competitors who will be there from I ynn Valley, North Vancouver and our own Municipality. Yours truly. "WEST VAN." Sunday School at 10:00 s.m. WELFARE NOTES A telephone message that al- ways brings joy to the member of the hisintensnce Committee on duty in the office sounds something like this, "I have more fruit in mp garden than my family can use and should be glad if you people could use it towards the Welfdre winter sup- ply," or "Could you manage ffl send for s parcel of clothing?" or "I have been reading your Welfare Notes every week, and as I still have 0 regular salary, I should like to set aside a small portion every month to help someone who has not." Then there is the other kind which also gives joy because of the opportunity to help, "I should like to tell you confidenti- ally of a local family who have always been spkndid citizens, but who, through no fault of their own are, like so many others, feeling the strain of the moment very keenly. They have plenty of fruit in their garden but cannot buy the sugar to put it up. I sm sure they would gladly exchange some of their fruit for sugar if you could ar- range anything like this. I might sdd that they are getting low in clothing snd shoes." West Vancouver's problem is peculiarly its own, there are very few, if any, of the type one sees about the city streets, that one knows st 0 glance need help. They are behind closed doors bearing their burdens alone, with that stiff upper lip true to their race. They do not find it easy to ac- cept something for nothing, but they msy have something useful to someone else which they glad- ly turn in to a general clearing house in return for something which they need, or it may be sewing time they csn give jsm making, hauling, cutting wood. "C(hoperation" is their key-word sll the time. At the moment fruit is the special need ss the season so quickly passes. It is sincerely hoped that the coming winter may be a whole lot easier for everyone, but be- ing ready in sny event is the only safe and sane method, therefore the Association re- minds its fellowwitizens that the phone number is West 109, and there is always s volunteer at the telephone in the mornings from 10 to 12.
