C. FROZEN HEIIRING IVhite residents of far away Hong Kong havp recently been introduced to a new fish food from British Columbia in the shape of frown herring and they are reported to have received it with relish. Enterprising fish people in British Columbia, alert to find and develop new markets, have discovered that their froz- en herring are welcomed in the British Settlement at Hong Kong. In preparing thesherring for this trade the producers select first quality fish, freeze them without salt, and put them up for market in 50-pound cases. Several shipments were made to Hong Kong during the herring fishing season just ended en the east and west coasts of Va(cou- ver Island. For many years past British Coolumbia fish producers have done s large business with China in drysalted herring but the ex- port of frozen herring to Chin- ese ports is s new departure. The drysalted herring shipped to Chins are used by tl)c Chinese people themselves, while the sales of frozen hemng in Hong Kong have been made to white consumers. Roberts'etter Meats FOR QUALITY AND SERVICE se The Store with the Neon Sign Phone West 190 During 1931 about 675 barrels of squid were landed by fisher- men of Canada's Atlantic coast for use as bait. Some 4,000 bar- rels of caplin were also used for bait purposes, as well, of course, as large quantities of herrjng, etc. Quebec s isndmgs of salmon from sea fisheries operations in 1934 totalled something more than 1,397,000 pounds. Nearly all the Quebec salmon catch is marketed in the fresh form. Cod, black cod, ling cod, and red cod are all caught in British Columbia waters. The ling cod and red cod are all marketed fresh. Part of the catch of the other varieties is sold in pre- pared form, although the greater part is disposed of fresh. Observed "How is Stillwellr'Fiat on his back." Dr. Henry and Mr. George Hay who with Reeve Leyland are the Hon. Presidents of the club rnHed the remaining two opening bowls. In formally declaring the green open the Reeve stimulat- ed the hearts of the bowlers by announcing that the municipal council had included an appro- priation for a new green in their relief work program submitted to Victoria, and that if further funds were secured from that quarter there was every prob- ability that the municipality would have a first class green constructed on a site at 20th St. snd Marine Drive, as the most likely location. In his introductory remarks the president thanked the Unit- ed Church for the use of the present greens, and also paid tribute to the greens convener, Wm. Partridge and his helpersx~ F. E. Brine and Lennox for the vast amount of work they had done on the grounds since last season. Following the ceremony Dr. 'Henry thanked the Reeve for of- ficiating snd Mr. Brine present- ed Mrs. Leyland with a box of chocolates and expressed the wish that the members would often have the pleasure of see- ing her and her husband on the greens throughout the season. A tempting and satisfying tea was served by a committee of ladies convened by Mrs. McColl Stitt after which the usual:hn President vs. Vice President match wss played; the vice president winning by ten shots.~ Excellent photos of the com- pany were taken by Mr. Brod- erick, himself an old bowler, and are now available at 60 cents each on application to the secre- tary, F.
