On October 23, for instance, I Q an average of 300 salmon anhour went up the fishway dur- ing an 8-hour period when the numbers were checked by the fisheries guardian on duty at the falls. Three days later the aver- age was 480 an hour and next day it was 605. Later on, a rise of water made it possible for fish to get past the falls without the aid of the fishway, which was constructed especially for the purpose of enabling salmon to ascend the river at times when water conditions make it diffi- cult, and sometimes impossible, for them to use the natural chan- neL By works of this kind, which have been built in diifer- ent parts of the country where the fisheries are administered by the federal authorities, the De- partment of Fisheries helps in ensuring adequate seeding of spawning grounds and the per- petuation of the runs of various kinds of fish.
