"Why was Guy Fawkes so un- popular?" asked the young son of the house as the last lirework was exploded. Before the attendants could extinguish it, the flames had spread on to the stage. "Fire i" shouted someone. . The cry was taken up, and for a moment it looked as though s panic would result. And then the comedian appeared before the footlights. "Don't worry, ladies and gentlemen," he said, "there is no danger." His words failed to reassure the audience, who continued to make for the exits. The comedian spread out his hands in a gesture of appeal. "Dash it all, ladies and gentle- men,o he cried, "if there was any danger, do you think I'd be here?" The excitement died down, snd the audience resumed their seats. COSIMUNICATIONS The Editor, West Van News, Hollyburn, B. C. Dear Sir: Now that the time for the Annual Election of Of- ficers to the various Municipal bodies is approaching, I should like to suggest that those offic- ers whose terms of office will shortly expire all stand for re- election, and that they be elect- ed by acclamation, thus saving the expense of an election. I am of the opinion that the present Councillors, Police Com- missioner and School Trustees, have each and all served this Municipality with diligence and to the best of their ability, and that we shall not gain anything by a change, but rather lose by it, since the present incumbents naturally know of the several conditions obtaining. The Land Deal recently put through by the Council is appar- ently a splendid thing for the Municipality, and will no doubt save us any increase in taxes this year and possibly for the next few years, but it is probable that further by-laws will have to be enacted during the coming , 12 months to cope with various phases of this situation that are bound to arise; it would thus seem advisable to keep the pres- ent Council, who are sll thor- oughly familiar with this mat- ter, to deal with it, rather than to have some members on the Council not so well versed with negotiations that led to the sale of lands. Furthermore, by so doing, in twelve months time 0 consider- able amount of labor and money will have been expended on im- provements to this section, and we shall be able to judge whether the Council were wise or unwise in their transaction, snd to give them credit or con- trawise to blame them.
