P. C. Chapman president of the Society, made s few introductory remarks, re. viewing the history of the organ. isation, and the good work that had been done latterly by J. Haydn Young, following the loss of their old leader, the late Pro- fessor Morgan. All the numbers given by the choir were well rendered, and again we have to note the im- provement in the sopranos which was at one time the weak spot of the choir. The basses were very good, as always, and the altos did good work, but the tenors were somewhat weak. "Deep. Itiver" by Burkigh and "the Bells of St. Michael'9 Tower" were sung wonderfully, the re- production oi the sound of the large tenor bell in the latter num- ber being most realistic. The audience demanded an encore for the Ses Chanties, which were given by the men's chorus with all the rollicking abandon of the sea. The rendition of "The Wind's in the South Today,o by the ladies chorus, was very well done, and they hsd to repeat the number. Mrs. C. Donohoe'3 pleasing voice was heard to advantage in the two songs chosen by her. She wss called upon for a well earned encore, as was Aubrey Clarke, vyhose first song, "Night Nurs- ery," was given with a fine pathos. The West Vancouver Orchest- ral Society, as at their own con- cert, delighted everybody with their playing of "Picador," and C. T. Bennett, Vocational Guidance Director of Vancouver, delivered an interesting address upon guidance work in the schools. The subject was opened by inti- mating the various stages in the child'a progress that counselling might be practiced. Important features of the scheme were placements of students and s fol- low-up when positions had been secured. Quoting from census returns the speaker pointed out that there were about 2000 vocations but it was impossible to let every child have a knowledge of re- quirements for all However, these vocations fell conveniently into groups and transportation alone accounted for nearly half. It was not necessary that a choice of vocation be made in the early grades. Stress wss laid upon the demand for the right personahty in filling sny position and a proper attitude towards the qualities worth having could be stimulated even in the first years at school. It was essential to discover what the occupation demanded and see if the individual came up to the requirement& There were many common ele- ments in the vocations snd cer- tain individuals could be success- ful in more than one position. A respect for honest labor should be encouraged. bir. Bennett was very emphatic in his statements that every student should do his best every day in order that teachers, parents and the stud- ents themselves gather some idea as to their capacity. A very in- structive part of Mr. Bennett's address was the answering of many questions placed before the meeting by members of the audi. ence. The business of the evening wss of s routine nature and a special committee was appointed to arrange for a social evening at the December meeting . November 28, 1930.
