M ~ Loo N uaaal Zwtdooopo Sot I Shrubbery bought from 8 re- liable nursery will have the roots together with 8 good eixed bali of earth, tightly bound up ln a burlap sack. When the plants are delivered pick each one up by the trunk or stem just above the ball of earth. If the earth 0ppears to be loosened from theoots it is 8 pretty good indica- tion that the plant has been handled roughly in digging or delivering, or that it has not been transplanted at the nurs- ery the requisite two or three times so as to form a compact snd sturdy root system. If you find that the soil has been brok- en sway from the roots you will likely have difficulty in getting the plant to grow, particularly during the dry weather. Our ex. perience has been that it is ad- visable to purchase shrubbery from one of the larger reliable nurseries where the stock is us- ually complete and where suf- 'ont help is employed to keep:eir stock free from disease and to transplant the shrubs fre- quently. After your plans have been delivered measure the approxi- mate size of the ball of earth 0- round the roots, then dig the hole about as large again so that the roots will have a certain amount of soft earth in which to spread. After the hole has been dug, fill it up with water and lct it 8osk into the soil. Fill in the hole with sufficient soil so that when you set the plant in place it will be at the right depth. After the plant has been set in place fill the hole half way up the burlap bag, undo the fastening at the top and turn the burlap down into the soil and finish filling in the hole. While doing this add water every four or flve shovels: of earth. Tamp down with your foot or a piece of two by four, being careful not to break away the ball of earth around the roots. Water thoroughly every two or three days during the dry weather and even after the fall rains start. Remember it takes a very heavy rain or a long wet spell to insure the moisture reaching the roots. Now is a good time to give thought to the shrubs you are going to place this fall. A reader wishes to know what is the best fertilizer to use for pansies: Peat moss and ground sheep manure with a very litle sulphate of potash mixed in is one of the finest pancy fertilizers, Place around the plants snd wat- er them frequently. CHEAP BUT EFFECTIVE BAIT I'OR EAR)VIGS Hero is an effective and cheap bait for earwigs that is recom- mended by R. G. Glendenning, entom«"ogist at the Dominion Experimental Farm, Agaosiz. The mixture given below, which is sufficient for a lot 33 by 120 feet, can be made st a cost of 60 cents, including labor: 12 lbs. bran 12 ozs. sodium fluoride 2 quarts molasses 6 quarts water. The ingredients should be mix- ed to a crumbly mass. The bait should be spread on a dry day in May or June, so it will be well to cut this recipe out and pre- serve it. DUNDARAVF.
