001C96CF February 22. 1929. iaaf isunderstood Billy Hawkins dropped into the chair next to me at the club and mopped his face with a silk handkerchief. He had great ~ dark rings under his eyes and ~ ~ ~ ~ his face was pitifully pale and & draNw. "Good heavens. what an ex- perience!" he moaned. "Take a night off some time, old man," I advised, "and sleep here at the club. It'l rest you." 'Oh, it isn't that!" he groaned. "As a matterof fact, I spent last night in jail." I signalled for another straw- berry ice cream soda, for he seemed on the verge of collapse. ~Vhen he braced up he spoke: "EVe went to the movies last night -- Carolyn and I," he sighed. "You know, when I am with Carolyn I always like the movies better. The light don' go down between the acts. "4Ve had gotten all the way out into the lobby after the pic- ture before I suddenly remem- bered that I didn't have my hat. I had left it under a seat. There was only one thing to do; I ex- cused myself and went back. Of course our seats had been filled, and as I walked down the aisle I realized to my horror that I was not exactly sure just where I had been sitting. "I finally selected the aisle that looked to be right and tried to force my way." Billy paused and rubbed a black-and-blue spot on his forehead tenderly. It seems there was some little op- position at the time. "There was a stout lady sit- ting in the seat where I though' had been sitting. I reached doive quietly and felt for my hat Billy collapsed sobbing intn his handkerchief. "And what." I prompted. "And when the lady scream- ed!" Billy wept. THE SVEST VAN NEWS ~lrs. Kind leigh was a very generous woman, and when she found out that the bachelor next door would have to spend Christ- mas all on his own, she asked her husband whether they should ask him to join them. The young man arrived and did lavish justice to the things put before him. By way of grace- full apology he remarked, with a beaming smile directed towards his hostess: "I hear that the highest comp- liment one can pay to the house- keeper is to eat heartily. You will observe I have been exceed- ingly polite." "Thank you," returned the generous woman. "Indeed, I think you have carried polite- ness to the point of fiattery." "Joha, I wish you would break- fast in the breakfast nook." "EVell, ain't I?" "No, you'e got one foot in the kitchenette." CLASSIF FOR PLUAIBING REPAIRS--Phone 4Vest 241R.
