OUR OUTI OOK- h the miserable gristle in place of a spine, The shrunken ideal, the hope out of line, The twisted desire, the wish- washy will, No cause to suspect the mak- up is ill? I wish I could tell you what we can all see As we look through the window out to the sea. 'Twix far away foothills and ever- greens near, I wish I could tell you, but cannot, I fear. Look out where Point Atkinson flash- es its light And the grand snow-capped mountains far to the right; See vessels unnumbered, the small and the great, Coming and going, burdened with freight. Look up at th! sea-gulls with pinions outspread, The white-headed eagle, far overhead; Then down at the wild ducks splash- ing in glee, Or gracefully riding the billows so free. And when the sun sets in crimson and gold, The scene is too lovely, it cannot be told. The path on tlie water, the tints in the sky, The tongue or the pencil of mortals defy. Vv'hen daylight is fading and at nat- ure's low call The mantle of darkness rs dropped over all. I.ook out at the vcss ls which pass in the night, Silently, swiftly, like phantoms of light. Fr.r across the deep waters, we see a bright glow, From lights bright and twinkling, row upon row. As mile upon mile these lights we be- hold )Ve think of '.he City with streets of pure gold; And the moon in her splendor, and stars to us call, Tl.ey bid us look upward to God over all. Is there no vision to look through the skin And see the deep voids that may lie within? The crack on the inside, where the outside is whole? The warp in the heart, and the limp in the soul?
