001C97BA 14 THE WEST VAN NEWS July 26, 1929. iVEST VAN. HIGH SCHOOL (Continued from Page 13) School, as both pleasant and profitable . IVhile the class-room studies are the "sine qua non" of any school and while it is true that "There is no royal road to learn- ing," extra curricula activities are not neglected at the West Vancouver High School. The Students'ssociation, run along strict parliamentary lines, under the supervision of the Principal and staff, govern all student activities of a social literary or athletic nature. The annual school party is an event of considerable importance to the boys and girls alike. This year a schedule of ten inter-class de- bates has been carried through. Grade IX, commercial, as the winning class, holds the shield, recently donated by the P. T. A. In football, the West Vancou- ver boys have for several vears, more than held their own against teams from larger schools. Last winter, the Junior Bovs Basket- ball team had the honor to be the only team to win a game from North Burnaby High, twice Junior Champions. The Bantam boys ran a neck-and-neck race with the lads of North Vancou- ver High. The girls did even bet ter in basketball and last winter reached the finals in their division of the Inter-High league. A visitor at the school, during lunch hour or after dismissal, would find almost any day of the week, groups of students, often under the direction of a teacher, playing baseball, badminton, piecticing choral songs, or pre- paring a debate. In addition, during the past two years, a very creditable Cadet Corps has been built up under the direction of Mr. J. E. Condon, Manual Train- ing teacher. The total enrolment for the year 1928-29 is 121 (fifty-four boys and sixty-seven girls); 31 of whom are pursuing the com- mercial course. The present staff'ncludesFred J. Patterson, B.A., U.N.B., M.A., U.B.C., Principal; James R Mitchell, B,A., U.B.C., Science teacher; Margaret Wall, Commercial teacher; A. Jean Agar, B.A. U. of Man.; Harold C. Provision for Senior Matricu- lation work and the organization nf a Junior High School are prob- lems, which will soon be press- ing for solution. )Vhile much still remains to be done, we feel that during the six years, since first organized, the West Van- couver High School has made creditable progress in develop- ing students, who fulfil the school motto "Mens sana in corp- ore sano" (A healthy mind in a healthy body). 1Z MANUFACTURERS BUY GOODSMADE IN CANAM GIVE NORK PEOPLE.K i RK BRING BK~KR M 2153 Marine Drive WEST 456 West Vancouver AMBLESIDE TEA ROOMS West Vancouver Ferry WharF Teas and Light Laches All the best brands of CIGARS AND TOBACCOS S1 ration's .3a &ery 1468 Marine Drive The Pioneer Bakeshop of West Van.
