We have to learn to do our lording in this ivorld over a good many rough places and around a great many sharp edges. If we insist that our friends be made to order, we shall never have any friends. We must take people as we find them, and ex- pend our desire for perfection in shap- ing the friendship we give rather than in expecting it in that which we re- ceive. Qualities that make a man feel su- perior are usually ones that cause his acquaintances to rate him as inferior. FEiV WORDS OF CHEER BEGINNING WITH "SN" Have you any prejudice a- gainst words beginning with the syllable "sn" '? Emerson had. AIrs. Emerson once referred to a lady of her acquai»tance as a snob. Her husband objecte(t, saying: "I do not like it. I pa&JP ticularly dislike all words begi&'I- ning with 'sn.'hough she is a snob you might call her a per- son who is very charitably dis- posed towards success." Noah webster lists a consid- erable number of words begin- ning with this syllable, observes the Utica Observer-Dispatch. Only a feiv of the words in this category are descriptive of pos- itive and lovely traits and things. Our promitive ancestors must have felt the way Emerson felt. There is, for instance, man' first and scriptural enemy, the "snake." Then there is "sneak," which defines the snake in hu- man form. Add "snoop," the petty spy and informer, and "sniper," the fighter from am- bush. And, of course, "sneer," which is the characteristic expression of the "snob"; and "snicker," a form of derisive laughter. Also "snatch," which defines an un- generous attitude, and "snap," as indicative of the argumenta- tive and belligerent persol1. A husband is popularly believ- ed to "snore" while asleep and to "snarl" while awake. Or, may- be he is only a "snip" who "sniv- els." "Sn" seems to be a hoodo. No wonder Emerson "snorted" over the word "snob," even though the woman it described had "snubbed'his good wife. 'S'nough to make anybody "sniff." Morgan will give their first public concert, and it is expected that the United Church auditorium will be filled for the occasion. The interest shown in this choir has been very gratifying, and the work of the pupils is of a high standard. Possibly the general public does not realise the high state of efficiency which has been developed in these young girls. There is a surprise waiting for them next Thursday. You should make a point of being present. Tickets may be obtained at the door on the evening of the concert. The following is the programme: I. CHOIR--"The Maple Leaf" ....................
