Gentlemen:-- EVhilst passing the Memorial Arch (the beauty spot of Marine Drive), last week, I noticed sev- eral ladies placing a wreath on same and becoming inquisitive made a few enquiries. The in- formation that I gathered was so astounding that I think it only right that every resident of this district at least should know of the good work and give credit to who it belongs and not to the Reeve and Council who I, with others, were silently thanking. The Duncan Lawson Chapter of the Daughters of the Empire owing to the dilapidated condi- tion of the monument erected to those who did so much for us took it in hand and at a cost totheir own chapter had the stone wall erected and since spring ofthis year have also paid for the services of a gardener to attend to same, the shrubs were I und- erstand donated by the Horticul- tural Society about two years ago. The occasion to which I refer in the first paragraph of this let-ter was the ladies of the Duncan Lawson Chapter of the Daught- ers of the Empire commemorat- ing the death overseas of him whose name they adopted to keepsame in perpetuity. VANCOUVER COUNCIL GAIA Y SCRAP TOAVN- PLANNING SCHEAIE (Continued from Page 7) a conference on the proposed measure with the Town Planning Commission on October 9. AVhen the proposed ordinance was presented to the City Coun- cil two weeks ago, a special com- mittee consisting of City Comp- troller A. J. Pilkington, Corpora- tion Counsel George E. McCros- san, K.C., City Engineer Charles Brakenridge and City Architect A. J. Bird was appointed to study it and to bring in a report to the City Council. The legal phraseology of the measure has been subject to keen scrutiny by Mr. McCrossan who presented suggestive revis- ions, it is understood. Several discussions have been held by the special committee. Interest in By-Law. Although the meeting was held in camera, it was called in the usual manner as a council meeting, notice to this effect be- ing posted on the notice board in the office of the city clerk. City Clerk william Mcgueen attended the meeting in his us- ual capacity for the purpose of reporting the minutes. The min- utes do not report details of dis- cussion, which are often desired by citizens who wish to know what their representatives on the City Council think. Keen interest has been taken in the proposed zoning ordinance as shown in the public meetings which were held by the Town Planning Commission. Thus the question has been raised as to why the council's deliberations on this public question were held behind closed doors. The opinion has been voiced by many citizens that the pro- posed measure will prove un- workable, and it is understood that certain civic officials are of the same opinion.
