001C9561 THE BLUEST VAN NEWS School Notes HIGH SCHOOL June 29, 1928. CorrespondenceI Seecs'ervice Sai:is'ies The Earwig IIenace Dear Sir: The City of Vancouver and all municipalities of Greater Van- couver have distributed tons of eanrig bait to the citizens and published many notices in the newspapers asking the people to keep close check on this destric- tive little pest. I am sorry to say our council does not seem to think this mat- ter is of any importance. The cities of Portland, Seattle, and other cities in washington where the earwigs have taken a good hold, have spent thousands of dollars, and the citizens have suf- fered and in many cases houses have been tom down by the own- ers. This is the time for EVest Vancouver to fight this unwel- come visitor before they spread to the bush and make it impos- sibe to check them. Now they are inhabiting the gardens only. Yours respectfully, K. A. RAY. Quality and low prices greet you with every purchase.Oui'ervice will satisfy you. Our prices will please you and the quality of OUR Goods you can rely upon. ;I ~ HARDWARE and GROCERY Second Year Commercial Students Completed two years'ourse. N~ws, Sir:-- A number of EVe~t Vancouver bird lovers wish to offer a word of appreciat;'ov. o'~fr. Fletcher's kindly tolerance in allowing the colony of cliff swallows to rear their broods unmolested under the eaves of our local theatre. Twenty-eight pairs of swal- lows have extended the stucco work with their nests and are now feeding their young with an estimated average of six thous- and insects a day per nest. This, of course, does entail some unsightliness in detritus, which gives some thoughtless ones an opportunity to use a hose to the destruction of the homes of these useful birds which de- stroy the hosts of sixteen dis- tinct diseases and germs as well. Your space wig not allow me to dilate at length on the very great value of insectivorous bird life to human welfare of which I think the Liverpool School of Tropical 3fedicine is authority. so I will again offer my thanks and those of my friends to Mr. Fletcher for his broad charity and thoughtfulness in allowing our avian friends to remain un- disturbed. I am your sincerely, PURCELL HARDAIAN llr. Hardman was on IVednes- day called down to Hollyburn Theatre by Wlr. Fletcher. who said an owl was stealing the young from the swallows'ests at the theatre. illr. Hardman went down and in his capacity as game warden shot the mar- auder, who proved to be a short eared owl.
