The Earwig Menace In this issue there appears a very timelv letter from Ex- Councillor K. A. Ray in connection with the earwig pest. This insect is comparatively a newcomer in Greater Vancouver, but already it has multiplied to such an extent as to have become a menace to the well-being of our gardens. Mr. Ray reminds us of the serious attention it, has been given in Van- couver and other cities across the international bordei. the city four men are employed in the summertime and have been for some years combating the pest. In addition earwig bait is available at cost in the city hall to any citizeiig who wish to purchase same. The earwig is in AVest Vancouver, and it would appear to be high time )hat something was done to do away with it. AVhile the permanent employment of a man i» the summer months is possibly too ex~ensive, we think that at least ear wig bait should be kept on hand at the municipal hall to be sold at cost to anyone desiring to purchase it. Ig'ew Direct Telephone Route Now Completed The June issue of "Telephone Talk"--House organ of the B. C. Telephone Company--canies a lengthy article describing the laying of the new submarine cable which now gives AVest Vancouver direct connection with the city. It says: "A direct telephone route to 4Vest Vancouver is now estab- lished. AVith the laying of a submarine telephone cable between Third Beach, Stanley Park, and West Vancouver, on Monday, April 30th, the last link in the new line was completed, and as a result )Vest Vancouver is given increased telephonic facilities to meet the demand of its excellent growth." "Under past condi- tions, calls from the a',an't city to YVest Vancou ver were routed across the tivo Burrard Inlet cables to North Van couver, and then by .) land cable There are e„, two submarine cables. one 100-pair and one 50-pair, which cross Vancouver harbor from the foot of Granville Street to North Van- couver. )Vest Vancou- Landing the cable at the old Holly- ver trunk circuits for- burn wharf, West Vancouver merly made their way by aerial cable from West Vancouver to North Vancouver, where they met one of the submarine cables and were carried to the south shore of the harbor." "Eventually the two cables became insufficient to h Idle all of the North Shore business, and the trunk cable be & n West and North Vancouver was also working to capacit . ~he solution finally agreed upon was to lay a cable direct to West Vancouver, leaving the cables between North and West Van- couver free for North Shore business, and shortening the wire distance between Seymour Exchange and EVest Vancouver from 7.8 to 4.44 miles." The article goes on to explain the various steps taken to connect West Vancouver by a direct line to the city. By laying a new underground cable from the Seymour exchange to the foot of Thurlow and Alberni Streets and the transfers of lines a 22-guage cable was released for use in the West Vancouver service. This was connected to an aerial cable extending to Chilco Street, from which an underground cable continued the line on under Lost Lagoon to Tatlow AValk, Stanley Park. Another underground cable was laid from there to Third Beach to link up with the submarine cable, whichlatter arrived on the Radnorshire on 28th April. Following the transfer of the submarine cable from the ship to the barge Iwalani on April 30th, the barge was towed to a point 800 feet off Third Beach and anchored. EVhen one end of the cable had been brought ashore and connected, the barge was towed across the bay by a tug, paying out the cable as it proceeded, until Hollyburn wharf was reached and the other end of the cable landed alongsidethe wharf. There it was connected to an aerial cable line up17th Street, and with that final step AVest Vancouver was forthe first time in possession of a direct telephone cable to thecity.
