Funeral of Mrs. Garland Mrs. S. E. Garland has passed on. West Vancouver has lost one of her outstanding citizens, and a wide circle of friends mourn the loss of a kindred spirit. Their hearts go out in sympathy to her bereaved husband and family. The kindly disposition of the deceased, her cheerfulness and geniality, had endeared her to a large circle, and the sudden ness of her passing came as a distinct shock to her legion of friends. Her popularity, and the esteem in which she was held is well attested by the many beau tiful floral tokens sent for the funeral service held at St. Steph en's Church last Friday. The service was very well attended by the personal friends of the deceased lady and by the mem bers of the different organisa tions to which she was attached. The Rev. A. Stephen Again our West Vancouver author, Mr. A. M. Stephen, has engaged the attention of critics nnd the reading public by the publication of a novel which ap pears in the list of autumn books published by the well-known firm of J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. "The Kingdom of the Sun" is not merely a fascinating story deal ing with life on the British Col umbian coast before the advent of white men, for it has also a right to be classed with litera ture beyond the category includ ing "best-sellers." Charles G. D. Roberts, Canada's best-known writer, speaking of this novel from the pen of Mr. Stephen, has said, "the latter half of the story where the scene is laid among the Haidas of the Northern Brit ish Columbian Coast, is extreme ly fresh and valuable, and I found it very 'gripping' ". The publishers notes afford a hint of the contents of the book. "Thrilling adventures on the Spanish Main, the conflict be tween White and Black Magic among the natives of the British Columbian Coast, warfare, mys tery and the triumph of a great love through sacrifice enter into this brilliantly written historical romance. Descriptions of poeti cal beauty abound throughout the book while the theme gives free rein to the power and im agination of the writer which are embodied in English that is masterly." The cover design is by Franz Johnston, Canadian artist of the famous "Group of Seven" and is indicative of the virile strength and unusual beauty of this new novel. It will form an ideal gift which British Columbians may send abroad to interest friends in our Province and, as a work of art, will take its place among the outstanding books by Canad ian authors. "The Kingdom of the Sun" is for sale in all leading bookstores.
