Boiled Ham Wash and scrape the ham well and put it on with cold water, a teacupful of vinegar and half a dozen of cloves. Allow half an hour to each pound of ham and half an hour over. When ready allow* the ham to cool in its own stock. This improves the flavor very much. Skin the ham without breaking the fat and sprinkle with a good quant ity of browned breadcrumbs, or if preferred, glaze it. I.O.D.E. GARDEN FETE The garden fete given by the 1-uncan Lawson Chapter I.O.D.E. Saturday afternoon in the grounds of Councillor and Mrs. J. B. Leyland's home, was most successful. Mrs. A. U. do Penc- ier. municipal regent, made a short speech declaring the fete open, after which "O Canada" and "God Save the King" were sung by all present. Mrs. de Pencier was presented with a bouquet by Miss Katherine Ilurst and Master Jock Leyland. The various booths were very prettily decorated and were set of to great advantage by the green expanse of lawn overlook ing the bay. An orchestra play ed throughout the afternoon, and there was a musical pro gramme. J. A. Flett and Mrs. Quane contributed solos and Miss Katherine Hurst danced. The accompanists were W. A. Ward and Miss Christian. "Did you hear about the Scotchman who went to have a profile picture taken?" "No." "He only had one side of his suit pressed." * * * "Did the fellow* driving the car make any attempt at all not to hit you?" "Yes, he motioned to me to get out of the way." * * * He: "Say, how* is it that you are always out when I call?" She: "Just luck, I guess." THE BIG NOISE. (Continued from Page 1) tery at any rate it will if the scientists can by hook or by crook keep it so, for it gives them something to argue about. So far as we are concerned, we should be content to let it go at that. If we cant have a real up-to-date earthquake like the rest of the world, and so far none of our residents have shown and. enthusiasm about it, let us have by all means a mystery. As the distinguishing feature of many of the most visited places on the earth, it ought to be an added attraction. What is the council going to do about this? SW IM M IN G There appears in this issue a letter from Mr. Sidney E. Dean advocating the formation of a swimming club here. Mr. Dean, who lives in Vancouver, has taken a great interest in swimming for a number of years, and his remarks are most timely. In a recent editorial we drew attention to the un rivalled opportunities possessed by the younger West Van couver generation to excel in swimming and all kinds of water sports. A swimming club in West Vancouver should become in a short time very popular and have a large number of mem bers. The majority of our children can swim, and all of them spend most of their spare time either in or on the water during the summer months. So far as water polo is concerned, it should be a comparatively easy game to start in this dis trict, because there is no expensive equipment to be purchased. All that is needed is a ball, which would only cost a few* * dollars, and a couple of goal posts, which could be very easily attached to the ends of the float at Dundarave. When the club got as far as playing other clubs, uniform swimming suits would have to be purchased, but these again would not be expensive. Turning to swimming and diving, this is well looked after and has been for a number of years by the Dundarave Regatta, which is one of the most important events of its kind on the Pacific Coast, and there was a lifesaving class this summer conducted by Mrs. W. Cuthbert, which was considerad by the two officials who conducted the examination to be the best of the season. With such a good start and with such oppor tunities as we possess in West Vancouver the formation of a swimming club would seem to be very desirable, and we hope that steps will be taken to this end along the lines suggested by Mr. Dean.
