The fine clear sunny weather of Sunday was responsible for considerable activity at the ski camp on Hollyburn Ridge. More hikers came over to enjoy the winter sports there than at anytime this season, and with allnature signs pointing to an early spring the ski-ing and tobogan- ning enthusiasts from the cityare not losing any chances of in- dulging in their favorite sports. s Mr. and Mrs. Parker have moved into their new home at 13th and Haywood. s s ~ Fred Bailey of Vancouver has taken over the duties of Fred McKee at the Lesage Drug Store. s ' B. The blue jays are back, a number of them hav- ing been seen recently at IVhyte- cliff, and the Indians report that the smaller kind of woodpecker, which leaves us during the wint- er. has returned and is busy sounding the trees for grubs. Correspondence The following letter from Ex- Cuuncillor Ray was received by us too late for publication last iveck ihlr Ray's remarks nnd his comparison nf local condi- tions will be of interest to our readers. To the Editor, Sir,--I'lease permit mo to ex- press mv regret at not heing able ' ko serve the citizens of West Vancouvey'n the Council this year owing to luck of time and the exigencies nf my business as well as my intended trip to Eur- ope. Though I am absent from West Vancouver at this time aml therefore not tnking any pnrt Iin the Municipnl election I wouhl like to express my views on the Ron&i nnd Rri&lge By-law. After five weeks of touring inSouthcrn California over its paved high- ways nnd goo&I roads, I cannot help giving my honest opinion that if the citizens of )Vest Van- couvcr turn down the bylaw on the sentiment that the ron&I is only going to servo the tourists, they will be mnking 0 great mis- take. All the cities an&I munici- palities on the Pncific Coast souih of )Vest Vancouver are well aware that good paved high- ways going through municipali- ties nre an asset to them nnd vnluable to any progressive com- munity. In motoring through small municipalities here even where there are no houses for miles one finds four line wide first class paved roads an&I these munici- palities capitalize every inch oftheir resources by interestingtourists and getting them to spend their money. )Vest Van- couver has better and more varl- ed resources for business purpos- es than I have seen in California. One may say that the Town- planmng bylaw will not permit these resources to be developed in )Vest Vancouver. The busi- ness scope of our municipality must be widened by a broad and sensible business policy and the bylaw altered accordingly. Whenthis is done the municipality will derive more taxes from business properties which are income pro- ducing than it can hope to getfrom strictly residential prop-erties. I trust that the citizens will use good judgment in connec- tion with this bylaw realizing how difficult it was to get mile one classified so as to persuade the Government to puy its share towards the erection of the bridge. Yours truly, K. A. RAY. Los Angeles, Califoiqfia. January 10, 1828.
