If plant hce are troubhng, sprinkle with nicotinne dust, or spray with a nicotine solution. If the leaves appear dry and life- less, take a small magnifying glass and look on the under side of the leaves, chances are you will find what is commonly known as red spider. They are particularly bothersome in hous- es where the air is very dry. They may be controlled by spray- ing with cold water; the colder, the better the result will be. The roots of plants grown out of doors can forage over a con- siderable area but those grown in a pot are confined to a definite area, consequently some measui e must be taken to furnish the mositure and food which the pot grown plant is unable to se lure through lack of space in ivhich to seek food. A good soil should be made by mixing one part well rotted horse manure or well decayed leaf mould with about four parts good garden soil. While clay is not particularly good for potted plants, fair suc- cess may be obtained by mixing a little fine sand with it to loosen it up. However, use the other mixture if at all possible. In fertilizing plants, add a little at a time. Manure water diluted so that it is about the color of tea makes an excellent fertilizer. This may be prepar- ed by covering a quantity of fresh manure with water and let- ting it stand about a week, drain off, dilute and use sparingly. An- other good fertilizer for indoor plants is two parts saltpetre mix- ed with one part acid phosphate. Use a teaspoonful to each gallon of water. Do not apply oftener than once every two or three weeks. A very convenient and quite satisfactory fertilizer in the form of tablets may be se- cured by those who do not wish to undertake the making of it at home. Plants quite frequently become pot bound.
