Cleveland Tells Bonrd nf Inter- view in isew York. I'Ian Another Ilare Construction of n pressure tun- nel to carry water under theLions'ate is considered the most feasible methmi of supply- ing the mainland. according to Mr. J. IValdo Smith, for mnny years chief engineer, and now consultant, nf the board of wnter supply of New York. Announcement to this effect was made by Commissioner E. A. Cleveland in the course of n report of his eastern visit, to members of the Greater l'an- couver LVB(er L)istrict nt 10 a.m. biav Visit ('itv All data in connection with the proposed tunnel was submitted by ibIr. Cleveland to i61r. Smith. It (vas explained to the latter that borings ha&i revealed solid rock nt a depth of 172 feet on the North Shore. After consi&l- ering the question fully, Mr. Smith declared thnt a tunnel seemed to be the only method of meeting the situation, but ad- vised that borings be continued further up the North Shore slope until solid rock coukl be found at a depth of 110 feet. i31r. Cleveland also announced that Mr. Smith had expressc&1 his willingness to come to Van- couver as a consultant if his ser- vices were required. It was emphasized by the com- missioner, however, that immed- iate construction of a water tun- nel was not contemplated. It was his desire to obtain all in- formation, so (chen it was finally decided to construct a tunnel, it would be unnecessa&T to com- mence investigations. The proposed water bore would be in the nature of a "U-shaped" pressure tunnel, with a concrete lined passage about 250 feet un- der the bed of the Lions'ate. The board authorized Mr. Cleveland to appropriate another $5000 for sinking test holes. SEASONAL Sl ECI&ELS Jahis CAMMED VEGETABLES Loganberry, per 4 ttz &in ..
