Harrison No. 5 It may be interesting to the boys and girls to know that Hol- lyburn can claim at least four birds all its own, of course I may be mistaken but there are four birds in IVest Vancouver that I have only noticed flying about the Marine Drive between Am- bleside aml Hollyburn, and these number two at least of our pret- tiest birds, but only one of them, the Meadow Lark, can claim any very great vocal powers. I have seen and heard the beautiful Meadow Lark round a- bout the corner of 17th Street and Marine Drive, for just at that point there are patches of meadow land which is the favor- ite haunt of this singer, and it can frequently be heard at its matins on an early spring morn- ing, for it delights to pour forth its song of praise in the early morning and its weird composi- tion would almost suggest it to be the Grieg of the bird world. Now I feel it almost unneces- sary for me to describe the Meadow Lark to you young folks as you surely must have seen this bright plumaged bird with its feathered coat of yellow set off so beautifully by the sort of crescent shape patch of darker feathers on the breast. Unfort- unately it is not willing to be admired and should you ap- proach this. singer when he is perched up on a post or fence he will at once stop and will not be. satisfied that he is quite clear of danger until he has flown to the farthest side of the meadow or field. This bird loves open meadow land and not until we get such land in West Vancouver may we expect to be favored with many of these birds, but should any of you chance to be on Lulu Island or Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, you may be sure of hearing quite a number of these larks singing as it is the open country that attracts these birds. You will probably be calling me to task for including the Meadow Lark as a Garden bird, but you must please excuse me shoruld I go beyond the garden fence to tell you about some of the birds that I meet in West Vancouver. A friend of mine told me that he had seen a Blackbird the other day running about our roads, and this was at Holly- burn. This gentleman was quite correct in naming this bird as a Blackbird, but I have an idea that he confused it with the Blackbird that at this time of the year fills the orchards and gardens with flute like music in England and Scotland, the bird known to my Scotch friends as the Merle, but the blackbird of West Vancouver is quite a dif- ferent fellow and has no song, but utters a sort of rough cackle when his nest is approached. The blackbird that you some- times see along the roads m small flocks is the Brewer Black- bird and it looks more like a min- iature crow as it walks along like a crow and does not hop about like a sparrow, but is probably a little neater in appearance than the crow. Besides the Brewer Blackbird there is another blackbird which I have seen on many occasions in the copse at the rear of Mr. Yates'ouse on the Marine Drive, this is the Redwing or Red Winged Blackbird. This bird cannot be mistaken as its name indicates just what sort of uniform he wears, as a mat- ter of fact he has quite a milit- ary appearance and is a very im- portant looking gentleman with his bright red epaulets and he can be a regular fighter should you approach his nest when he has young, for he will give you such a scolding and gets the as- sistance of all his riends in his endeavour to drive any intruder away. The other bird that I have not- iced in this particular locality is the Blue Bird and it is a rare treat to see this most attractive bird disporting himself about our roads. Some of my friends may have seen this bird recently, but it is now several years since the Blue Bird was noticed. It cannot pos- sibly be mistaken although see- ing that we have three different Blue Birds in Western Canada two of these -- the Western Blue Bird and the Mountain Blue Bird --its exact identity might be confusing, but I am rather of the opinion that those that I saw were Mountain Blue Birds and perhaps someone who is more Red Cross Meeting on TIIursdav The newly formed West Van- couver Branch of the Canadian Refl Cross Society will hold the first meeting on Thursday, June 9th. at 8 p.m., in the Canadian Legion rooms, ferry building, when committees will be ap- pointed for the various phases of the work. Mrs. Selwood is chairman of the meeting. The motto of the Red Cross is "Health Service and Citizenship" and it is felt that the good work the organization accomplishes will ensure the sympathy and prac- tical assistance of everybody in the district. IVe are asked par- ticularly to state that the meet- ing on Thursday is open to all adult residents of IVest Vancou- ver. Baseball The Intermediate Boys Base- ball team of West Vancouver ad ded another victory to their string when they easily defeat- ed St. Margaret's Umted 19 to9 at the New Ambleside Park last Friday. Tonight the boys meet Chown Adanacs on the same grounds. The boys are all working hard selling tickets for their concert which is to take place Tuesday evening, June 7th, at 8.15, in the Hollyburn Theatre. Crane-Phillips Wedding In the report of the Cranei Philhps wedding given m our last issue it was stated that the wed- ding supper was served at the home of the bride. This was a mistake. The supper was serv- ed at the home of Mrs. G. Elf- strom, 14th and Marine, and the tasteful repast was a well thought out sequence to the happy event. familiar with this bird than my- self, will verify this. This month is the month of song and I am going to tell you about the bird that I think is the best singer. I wonder if you can guess his name, but I'l tell you next week. nants iuxaxrxLxtx~nttxlxlxndxrxlxpcIxcussl BndRMl~fx!RBfnfTRIRIRixxxvxtwmusclxwcxliKlxwcwxisin tcxwotwwwwwcwxwcxfxNNIRIRIRIRIRIXetriasczahPEN R ic MNDIEntLxtxtsfxvcuct tons!smixixlxtxtxstsux!Dwwooxcfoo wooxwccGcoco Dccotoo wlj~tcuxxw cw!RIRIRRudtd@fRudxi~mcf +~atooxoomwJxwc~eu rice f the AIRS ED vice t 4n Main Office NORTH 305 West Vancouver Office WEST 102 Cor. 18th and Marine I dt I ~ Residence WEST 316 itood ird r) )IIJS lf grsovs ,t 412L fficc We carry a large stock of Fir, Hemlock R Cedar Lumber of all dimensions.
