THE WEST VAN NEWS Board of Trade MeetingThere' No Need to pay high prices for pure soap. ] 0 Lees Castile meets all Pharmaceutical r e q u i re- Special Report on Water Supply Report of Special Committee Appointed by the West Van- couver Board of Trade to In- vestigate the Water Supply. We beg to report: The present source of supply is Hollyburn Ridge extending from the height of land west of White Lake to the easterly boundary of the watershed of "Brothers and Sister Creek" and resembles a sponge, being to a great extent covered with mos- ses, trees and matted vegetation through which snow and rain percolate. The creeks appearing on the lower levels are merely surface drains, and are almost dry dur- ing July and August of an aver- age year. One of these, Broth- ers Creek, is now one of the main sources of supply, and in the event of its being retained as such we offer the following sug- gestions:-- (1) All foreign matter, wheth- er animal or vegetable to be dredged out of the creek above the dam at the intake. (2) A settling tank to be pro- vided at a suitable distance a- bove the present intake. This tank to be cleaned out at regular intervals, especially during the summer months, when the water is low. (3) A health area to be set a- part and fenced in. Such area to include the intake and the Creek for a considerable dist- ance above it. (4) Suitable notices to be post- ed indicating this area. (5) A patrol to be kept up regularly during spring and sum- mer months to prevent campers and hikers from trespassing. (6) In the event of the other Creeks being retained, a health area to be set apart to include all such Creeks. All the above are made the more imperative because of the publicity which has been given to Hollyburn Ridge, as a Mecca for campers, and as aplay-ground for summer and winter sports. Therefore the population of the Ridge will in the near future a- mount to thousands daily; suf- ficiently large to contaminate all the source of supply north of tide-water. Again, the purchase by a syn- dicate of a large tract of land on Hollyburn Ridge a short time ago, indicates clearly that much development will take place there, and almost leads one to the conclusion that it will be practically impossible to segre- gate the source of this water supply in a very short time. The present system of distri- bution is in wooden pipes and this we think should be discon- tinued and all replacements done with steel pipes, because of the longer economic life of the latter. Taking a probable and by no means an exaggerated estimate of the future development of the municipality, in 10 years time there should be a population of at least 25,000 people; requiring approximately 2,000,000 gals. of water every 24 hours. To make provision for a boun- tiful supply during the dry sea- (Continued on Page 8) The Board of Trade held their regular monthly meeting last Monday in the new Ambleside Hall. The Secretary read the corre- spondenfie that had passed be- tween him and the Postal author- ities in connection with improved. postal facilities. The District Superintendent of Postal Service in Vancouver, as a result of the map anti information 'supplie&1 him by the Board an&i his own investigations, has recommend- ed that there be two collections and two deliveries of mail per day in the district. It is prob- able that this service will be es- tablished in the near future. The meeting discussed the feasibility of having mail collec- tion boxes located in various street intersections on Marine Drive, the Postal Superintendent having advised the Board that his department would erect the boxes, providing that the munci- pality would make satisfactory arrangements to have mail col- lected from them and taken to the local post office. Mr. John Lawson was appointed a special committee to see whether the latter would collect mail from letter boxes at certain points. Mr. Tite brought up the ques- tion of the rockpit for the stores now being erected on Marine Drive, by Mr. J. S. Yates. The matter was referred to the Town Planning committee. Mr. J. Lawson gave a report on his trip to Victoria in connection with the P. G. E. which he made as a delegate of the Board. He stated that both he and the dele- gates from North Vancouver had received a very sympathetic hearing at the hands of the Gov- ernment. The Government's set policy was to complete the P.G. E., and, while they were unable to do more this year than attend to the very heavy replacements that were necessary, the more assurances they received that the people of the North Shore wished the line to be completed, the easier it would be for them to have this done. The question brought by Mr. F. Tite before the meeting of cushioned seats and linoleum in- stead of cocoanut matting in the cabins of the ferries was refer- red to the transportation com- mittee. The matter of a sunorium raised by Dr. Nnipfel, was laid over. A resolution of sympathy was passed to Dr. A. C. Nash, who is a member of the board, on the recent loss of his son, and a wreath was ordered sent to .the funeral. Applications for membership were received and passed from the following: Messrs. J. R. Sig- more, H. E. Innes-Ker, Appleton, J. T. Watt and Sakar. The report received from the special committee appointed,to investigate the water supply was adopted and a resolution passed that the board petition the coun- cil in reference to this matter. The meeting then adjourned and a delegation proceeded to the council meeting to present copies of the report and resolution, which are as follows: ments and will meet yours. Seeds, the Ambleside general merchant, was the recipient of two medals this week awarded him for his proficiency in shooting. One is a bronze medal from the D. C. R. Association and the other a silv- er medal from the Technical High School Rifle team. Bobby is very modest about these dec- orations. He should be very proud of them as there are few boys of his age who can boast . such proficiency in the use of the rifle. Fine Goalkeeping by Stanley Strong Stanley Strong, who lives at 14th and Marine, and who is goal keeper for the Vancouver Col- umbus Soccer team gave an ex- )t dtt& ceptionally fine display of goal keeping in the game played last Saturday't Nanaimo between South End Foresters and Colum- bus. Columbus was beaten 3-1 but the "Nanaimo Press" in re- porting the game said:--Had it not been for Strong in goal for Columbus the score would have been much larger against the team. Strong stopped them from all angles, and it was only those which were impossible to save that went through." Another Press report said:-- "Strong in goal for Columbus, saved his net f ' time after time when it lookedas though he was beaten. His fine display receiving merited ap- plause from the stand." f Bill Davey and Douglas Reid are other West Vancouver boys who are members of the Colum- bus team. Proposed School Site at Cypress Park The school trustees have been for some months desirous of ob- taining a suitable school site at Cypress Park. The council on Monday informed them that their application for such a site would receive immediate consid- eration. It is possible, we und- erstand, that the owner of the property which the school trus- tees wish to acquire may trade it for municipally-owned land.
