They will cause it to become sticky and to lose its lustre. When leather is in nee:1 SIf cleaning use a damp cloth and ra1ittle castile soap. Rinse with ~another damp cloth and dry with a clean dry cloth--returning the original lustre by rubbing brisk- ly. Don't allow household pets to lie on upholstered furniture. They may not only soil it, but cats, especially, will ruin the cover with their clawing. If silver is stored in a box or tin filled with powdered starch it will be quite bright when tak- en out. By Dr. Frank Crane onSINOOSOOXOdssa Opinions are like ripples. How long they last, depends upon the surface on which they appear. The mind of the individual who holds the opinion is the surface whose character determines its lasting quality. Think over your friends. Some change their opinions con- tinuously, others with great infrequency. You have seen many kinds of ripples--ripples on wat r, ripples on sand, ripples on ice, and ripple marks in solid lime-n ~~ stone. All are duplicated in the minds of men. On water, ripples alter with each succeeding breath; in stone they change only with the erosion of years. One type of mind is fiuid; another concrete. The first is plastic but unretentive; the second is retentive but unchanging and indurate. One changes its opinions too frequently; the other not frequently enough. In ageneral way thee two characteristics of mind repre- sent two stages of life. In youth the tendency is to chango our opinions too often. In old age the tendency is to change them too seldom. Youth is a time for ripples on water. It is a time for alter- nating, changing open-mindedness, for a sort of sparrow-like hopping from one idea to another. Opinions are formed, destroyed and re-formed with little effort. Old age is a time when the ripples of opinion seem marked in stone. They are fixed. They alter only after long erosion by con- trary evidence. Both attitudes arp off balance. One leans too far forward, the other too far back. Between the two extremes is the happy medium. Of the two attitudes the one that can be most controlled is that of solidity. Little can be done to change the attitude of the mind of youth, and it has time to steady down anyway. But open-mindedness is a habit that can be cultivated."A new truth is a truth and an old error is an error," is a good motto for advancing years. THE WEST VAN NEWS Presentation to Bruce Pollard The Canadian Legion, IVest Vancouver brancfi, held a smoker last night at the Amble- side Hall in honor of Comrade Bruce Pollard, who is leaving on Monday with his wife and fam- ily for England, where they will in future reside. Comrade Pol- lard, who has been a resident of West Vancouver for 16 years, was presented during the eve- ning with a case of pipes from "West Van Comrades." Several comrades ma&le brief speeches, wishing the guest of the evening all good fortune and voicing their regrets at his leav- ing Canada. Pollard in reply ex- pressed his thanks for all the kindly feeling shown and spoke of his deep appreciation of the gift whi&(h had just been made to him. He wished, he said, to stress particularly the word "comrade." Other organizations could be joined by the payment of money, but the qualification for the Legion, in which all were comrades, was self-sacrificing service. No matter whether they had been under fire or not, they had had to put up with consider- able 'hardship for the good of the cause. Old times and old scenes in West Vancouver were talked over and the smoker broke up with the singing of the National Anthem. School Trustee Election The election for a school trustee to take the place of Mrs. E. S. Gamage takes place to- morrow at the Ambleside Hall.
