The Editor, West Van. News, West Vancouver, B. C. Re Ferry Finance. Dear Sir: In view nf the statement of Councillor Watt in your inst issue. Fepcnte&l by him at the Ratepayers'ssociation last night to the ei?&wt that the Ferry Department for 1926 paid 9&k per cent. interest on $ 196,- 000.00 (this is the amount of debentures issued for ferry pur- poses), I find it very digficult to follow his figuren in the face of the published statement. Quite possibly it may be owing to nn oversight on my part in reading the figures, but I nm sure that a little elucidation of the matter through your columns will be ap- preciated by those of us ivho may be a little ivenk on figures. It would nppenr by the state- ment that after writing ogf $8,400.61 I)s deprecintion there was left a suflicient sum to pay the interest on the debentures, $9,988.97. That disposes of the debenture interest. Say tive and one-tenth per cent. on $ 196,- 000.00. )Vhere does the 9)/ per cent. figure come from? Surely our Chairman of the Transportation Committee does not consider that 8 sum written oif our assets as depreciation is available to be included in 0 figure representing interest or profit on our invest- ment? Another point in this connec- tion. It would appear to me that the assets covered by this item of depreciation amount to the sum of $ 122,857.21. This is roughly speaking a depreciation of 7 per cent. Does our Chair- man of Finance or Chairman of Transportation think that that figure was anywhere near enough to cover the deprecia- tion? Especially in view of the fact that the Doncella had had to be sold for about $2,000.00? A depreciation of say about 45 per cent. And the No. 5 has had to be re-engined at a cost of about $ 11,000.00. Would 7 per cent., or even 17 per cent., cover the depreciation there? If we admitted that 7 per cent. were suflicient to write oil's against the Ferry Terminal valuation o $ 14,710.00 and the smaller as sets, how can 7 per cent. be said to be a businesslike sum to b written off the valuation of th boats, busses, and the Four teenth Street )Vharf? I understand that we hav over a quarter of a million dol lars invested in the transports tion business (this does not in elude $40,000.00 in the Dun- ilarave wharf), and against this we have a valuation on paper of $ 118,222.30. It would seem to me that the figures show 0 return of about two-fifths of one per cent. on our Investment. If 8 proper ilepre- cintion nccount were kept I nm afrni&l that it woulil not look quite so good as that. If we are to reduce fares, it would be as well to know exactly where we stand. If the rate- payers of the municipality nre to foot the bill on the &lay ng reckoning. we had better pro- ceed with an understnmling of the mnnner of our going, which, I confess, ls a trifle obscure to me. The reduction of fnres might possil&ly pny us. That is not my present trouble. I hnve been trving to flgure out where we are. I cannot reconcile my reading of the figures with the stntements of some of our muni- cipal oiflcers. Yours truly, W. W. LEFEAUX. Editor IVest Van. News. Dear Sir: Please allow these bright flashes to adorn your columns, perhaps to show that there nre 8 few practical thinkers still. We view with interest the operations of certain active bodies to establish a courso of "Home Economics" at the Uni- versity of Br'itish Columbia. If this saudy will embody all the points it should, it could revolu- tionize the world of trade and commerce. As women are and will be the channels of financial disburse- ment for home-keeping, they are the chief factor in the question of all economy, be it home or political. For instance, if milk com- panies raised the price of that commodity unreasonably, the matter could be quickly and ef- fectively settled by each home taking half its usual milk supply for only a few days. No com- pany dealing unfairly could carry on if women were awakened to their true sense of responsibil- ity along these lines. I, The women of New York enied themselves sugar for 8 rief period when that article ecame prohibitive, and it re- ulted in an immediate drop to ormal value. We do hope that the study of orna Economics will not be con- ned to the mere details of cook- g and sewing, but will reach he broader sense of economy. this can be done, the move- ent is worthy of support. NON N Y. Team Work In anything--it's team work that counts. No matter how strong the imlividual, he becomes more powerful with team co-operation--team work. Have you joined the home town team? Are you making your co-citizens realize your desire to assist them com- mercially and socially? Are you helping them to feel the a&l- vantages of living in this good town of ours? Are you extend- ing a cordial heart and hand? If you do--they will pass the good wor&l along--it becomes an endless chain. The team work is strong and will thus attract others--who in turn will lend their hands, talents, resources aml energies to mutual civic progress. Now is a good time to "join up." The only initiation fee is a resolve to do your part, an&i the dues come back to you in personal dividemls. Do your part in making North Vancouver a better place to live and thrive. Speml your money at home--where your dollar continues to do a hundred cents worth of work for the people. Incidentally it will help your family. Make the conditions here such that they can remain an&I develop. Every boy and girl is a potential asset to the community. Right development of the asset implies better schools, wholesome amusement, promising business opportunity, environment that recognizes the developing power of youth and gives it a real chance. Do your part in developing the district an&i so help to provide these oppnrtunities. BE MORE TIIAN RESIDENTS--BE CITIZENS. When you help the home merchant--the home industry-- they in turn help build up better facilities for you and your children. BUY FROM YOUR HOME MERCIIANT.
