001B6BA1 ,2 I THE IVFeST VAN NEWS "Hello there)" greeted the Sandman. as he appeared before Lucy, Lving awake in her little bed. and waiting for him. "I'm sorry to be so late, but am awfully rushed tonight," he explained. "I have to see Bar- bara. up the hill--and then must broadcast some tales to a who)e bunch of B. C. kiddies at once, or some will be falling asleep be- fore I get around their way!" "Well-- !" he began after a short pause, during which he settled himself at the foot of the bed, and pulled his Thinking Cap farther on. "I once passed a garden where a little orphan child sat on a broken down stool, with a bunch of rose-petals on an upturned box in front of her. "Every so often she would pick up a petal. Iay it aside, and sit talking to herself. This is what I heard her say:-- "Once-upon'-time there was a very poor little girl with only an old broken down chair. and a footstonl, in all the vrnrld. One day she sat on her little chait making rose-petal quilts for the fairies, and each quilt she finished. she put on the stool in front of her. At last, when all were done, the fairies came for them, and as they took their prettv gifts each left one in its place for the little girl. At last she was rich enough to buy a big house, all the playthings she had ever wanted and have servants to wait on her! Still she was not quite happy. and the day she took out her little chair, and sitting on it made another rose-petal quilt, hoping one more fairy would come along for it. Then it lay on the little old stool, and after a while along came the last little fairy that needed a new quilt. "But what shall I give you'I" asked the tiny creature. Bending forward. the little girl Ivhispcred something. Then the fairy went away. but pres- ently came back, leading by the hand a beautiful lady. This ladv has come to be your mother)" said the fniry. Then the little girl lived happy ever after. for she had a benuti- ful house, all hcr wonderful play- things. and best nf all. "the wish of her heart, a Nother to love her." Wasn't that a nice little story? asked the Sandman. I have often )istened to that orphan child's stories, since, he said, and will tell you another sometime. "We)l-- I I must be off now. Goodnight Child," he Onished. ")Vi)l send you a couple of dreams later." "Goodnight Sandman l" ans- wered Lucy, waving at the thin air, as he faded out before her eyes, and she turned over to fall asleep. PERSONALS hfr. F. AV.
