001B6B99 TIIE )VEST VAN INEIVS The air in the little village school-room seas so hot it was no wonder that htiss Grant found it impossible to get the childrnn to pay attenion to her. She sighed as shn looked at Angola. Angola was the eldest and should have known better, but she sat with her hands in her lap staring stupidlv at the black- board, evidently not even trying to think. Poor Angelal She was so hot, her hands were sticky, she had broken the point of her pencil, and she felt she just couldn' even copy the proverb that Miss Grant had chalked on the board. "stake hay while the Sun Shines. Nake hay ivhile the Sun shines." Angels absently re- peated the words to herself, and her eyes strayed from the black- board to the open window. Out- side the school-house the Sun was shining. and over beyond the school-house wall came the sweet smell of new-mown hay from Farmer Batt's meadow. "If only we could make hay instead of writing about it 1" thought Angels. And then something happened. There ivas a knock on the door and in came Larry, the farmer's lad. "Here's a note for you, ma'm," he said to the teacher. htiss Grant took the note and read iL "Now what do you think. childrcnT" she said, looking up and smiling. "I"armci Batt is afraid it may rain bofors the evening and spoil thn crop, nnd ho has asked if you woukl liko to help him to gather in the hav." How the children jumped up and cried "Hurrah I" They had forgotten the heat and hoiv tir- Ed they had felt. Angola and Martin, golden- hairod htary and her brother and sister, Jim Todd and little Nan put away their pencils and pnp- ers and shut down their desks. Then they put on their hats nnd followed, tivo and two, behind ihtiss Grant, through the school- yard gate and over t othe mead- 0'w. The farmer saw them coming. "Here you arel" he cried. "I knew you would come and give me a hand." And ho gave them each a rake (all but Baby Nan, for she was too little) and set them to work. And how hard they worked! And what fun it wasl They took armfuls of hay over to the wag- on ivhere Farmer Batt stood on his ladder urith his big harvest- ing fork. Then, when the vrag- nn couldn't hold aiiother hnnd- ful. Farmer Batt climbed to the top and msdo a cosy nest for little Nan bocauso she was tirnd. Then ho sai&l "Gcn-upi" to ol&l Ncd. his favnrito horse, aml olt they ivent. Aml the others fol- io&cad, each cnrrying an extrn bundle of hay. But that ivasn't the ond of a lovely afternoon, for the farmer invited them into the farmhouse kitchen: and they snt round the big white table and drank sweet lemonade out of blue china mugs nnd ato big slices of delicious cake. And just before they left he gave them each a new-laid egg for their breakfast. And how tired they werc l As soon ns their little hen&is touch- ed their pillows that night they were right away in the Lan&i of Nod. But late that evening, when the birds too had gone to bed and all wns still, the gathering clouds broke and &lown came the rain. Farmer Batt chuckled as he looked out through the farm- house window. "Three cheers for my little harvestersl" he said. "It can rain now as hard as it likes. I don't care!" PERSONAL.S Mr. and htrs. A. E.
