001B6B84 July 30th, 1926. Life Saviug Demonstration at Horseshoe Bay Sixteeen members of the Royal Life Saving Society, under the leadership of H. H. Duggan, Sec- retary of the Society, gave a life-saving demonstration at Horseshoe Bay on Sunday after- noon, July 25th, under the aus- pices of the Horseshoe Bay Boat- ing and Yachting Club. At least three thousand people witnessed the performance--the members of the Boating Club and friends being accommodated on the Club House verandah while a host of spectators thronged the beach. A great number of small boats, launches, row-boats and canoes gathered around the float to watch the in- teresting demonstration In addition to the practical work a lecture on "First Aid" was then given by Mr. Duggan, assisted by M. E. Curran, in the Club rooms. The members of the Royal Life Saving Society were then entertained at a dinner given by the Club in the Horseshoe Bay Hotel and the Blue Dragon Inn. Summer School Picnic at Whytecliff More than two hundred stud- ents and members of the teach- ing staff of the University Sum- mer School were present Friday last at the school's annual pic- nic at Whytecliff. After lunch had ben served at 11 a. m. at the University, the party left for North Vancouver where they took the 2 p. m. train to Whytecliff. Boating, hiking, games and dancing were feat- ures of the day's outing. The party returned at 11 p. m. to the city. Beach Party at 19th and Waterfront On Saturday night Mr. and . Mrs. H. Nicholls, 19th and Wat- erfront, gave a swimming party and bonfire on the beach at the foot of 19th. Community sing- ing was indulged in, and refresh- ments were served. West Van Scottish Society A committee meeting of the executive and the picnic commit- tee was held this week to ar- range for the purchase of the gold medals to be donated to the Dundarave Regatta. These med- als will be competed for by bona fide West Vancouver children resident in the municipality, the same as last year. All members of the society are invited to attend the Memorial Service on Sunday, August 8th, in the Memorial Park, 20th and Marine, at 3 p. m., under the auspices of the West Vancouver "dlranch of the Canadian Legion. tt is hoped that as many memb- ers as possible will avail them- selves of the opportunity to at- tend this very worthy service. Mr. Charles Appleton has re- turned from Surf Inlet, where he has been for several years connected with the Belmont Surf Inlet Gold Mining Company, which is now closed down. Parsons were edjourn- cch THE WEST VAN NEWS Mr. George Gourlay Has Accident Mr. Gourlay in stepping over a log in the woods last Friday, slipped and gave his right knee a very bad wrench, necessitating medical attention. Mr. Gourlay will not be able to walk for two weeks, but is carrying on his business as usual by means of a telephone extension to his bed in the room at the back of his of- fice. L. 0. B. A. The regular meeting of the L. O. B. A. was held Thursday, 15th July, in Dundarave Hall, when the R. W. Grand Mistress Sister Smith of B. C., and R. W. Junior Deputy Grand Mistress Sister Darracott of B. C., visited the Lodge. The latter gave a very able discourse for the good and welfare of the association, which was very much appreciat- ed, after which refreshments were served. Board ' meeting of the newly organ- ized board of directors of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway was held in Vancouver Tuesday afternoon. Hon. Dr. W. H. Sutherland is president of the board and Mr. W. J. Blake Wil- son is vice-president. Only rou- tine business was discussed, the general question of policy not being considered. The directors are each studying certain phases of the railway situation, how- ever, and some radical changes in policy may ensue in the next few weeks.
