A Child's View -- continued from page5 world disappeared. Only a rushing stream broke the silence. Trees grew thick and formed a closed canopy that screened the forest floor. Huge stumps and rotting logs gave evidence of the logging of the old growth forest that had happened long ago. Traces of trails wound along the uneven forest floor, skirting the occasional large boulder. When Donny and I were five, Mother permitted us to play inside the park after we solemnly promised we would stay within sight of our street. We managed this for a while, but inevitably our explorations took us deeper and deeper into the Woods, until one day we became hopelessly lost. We had wandered north into the middle of the park but then could not find our way back. We knew that if we went far enough east or west we would eventually escape. We tried doing this, going in both directions, but found our way blocked by brambles or piles of fallen trees. We went back and forth across the rushing stream, filling our boots with icy water. It began to rain heavily. Donny sat down on a log, chest heaving, and stared miserably into space. His face was wet with tears and rain. "We should stop here," he gasped, "and build a shelter." "Are you crazy?" I cried, shaking my head. "We have to keep moving. Don't you remember what happened in Peter and the Wolf?" "Or the Wizard of Oz," he croaked, struggling to his feet. Soon we had convinced each other that we were doomed to a grisly fate. Moaning and sobbing we came to a giant, rotting log we had encountered earlier. I said to Donny, "All we have to do is climb over this and then we'll be out." I threw myself at the log, and by dint of sheer effort, I scrambled up and over it. Grunting, smeared in dirt and rotting wood, I landed on the other side. I turned around to discover Donny standing there, staring wide eyed. "How did you get here?" I demanded. "I walked around the end of the log," Donny replied innocently.
