West Vancouver Memorial Library - Fall 2008 - Issue 18 The Inquiring Mind NEW Information Centre You may have noticed something new in the Main Hall of the Library - three small, stylish new desks to the east of our old Information Desk. This new Information Centre has room for up to three Librarians, slightly separate from one another to facilitate ease of conversation with our patrons. Nearby you will soon see a research consultation area with online as well as print resources and study tables. Coming out of our Strategic Plan commitments to "Manage resources wisely - Optimize staff resources" and to "Position the Library as the best resource for information and knowledge online and onsite" - this will eventually be the main Information Centre for our adult patrons. Librarians will be based here, and because of the backup provided, will be freer to accompany you to track down resources anywhere in the Library. This is a key element in a reorganization of staff, furniture and materials that will continue well into 2009. Over the past several years, Library information service delivery has been changing radically. Where once two separate departments had distinct roles in serving our adult patrons - the Adult Department with its circulating books and audio-visual materials and the Reference Department with its encyclopaedia and government documents - the lines have been blurring since the advent of electronic databases and the Internet. This fact, amongst others, led us to the decision to merge our information service to the public. Until the books and internet stations are moved to accommodate this, we will continue to operate Information Desks in the Fiction Area and downstairs in Reference, as well as staffing the new desks as fully as possible. For a few months our resources will be moving about and so will we. Thank you for your patience as we work towards offering you even better service in the future. www.westvanlibrary.ca tel. 604.925.7400 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, BC, V7V IJ8
