West Vancouver Memorial Harry Greenwood, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board It was with very mixed feelings that the Library Board approved at their June meeting the staff recommendation that the Library's Bookmobile be retired and that staff implement their transition plan for serving the remaining Bookmobile customers. The bookmobile has been a community symbol of the Library for over 40 years with stops from Horseshoe Bay to Park Royal. However, use has dwindled significantly over the past decade and we agree with the staff assessment that there are more efficient ways to serve the community. The bookmobile itself is aging and has been requiring increasingly expensive repairs in the past several years. In addition, Miriam Sherman, our driver, has decided to retire. During June, staff have been contacting all of their regular customers and explaining the situation as well as all of their options for service. Customers who live in retirement or care facilities and used the Bookmobile because they could not get to the Library, will be served by our Home Service staff. In addition, the Seniors' Shuttle will happily drop anyone off at the Library on its rounds. Other customers are able to get to the Library and indeed, many used both the Library and the Bookmobile. Our thanks to drivers over the years, as well as the people who loved the library on wheels. www.westvanlibrary.ca
