Library · The Inquiring Mind Uncovering West Vancouver's Past Did you know that the Reference Department houses a local history collection? There is even a designated West Vancouver section where you can find books on local lore such as Cha-Hai (Horseshoe Bay): A Look at the Past, Reeves of West Vancouver and Place Names of West Vancouver: A Gazetteer. And the collection is not limited to books. You can peruse our Clipping Files for newspaper articles on a plethora of North Shore topics, ranging from West Vancouver - Architecture to West Vancouver - Zoning. Or if you want to go further back in time, you can check out our collection of historical local newspapers on microfilm which reach back to the early 1900s. For those of you more visually rather than textually inclined, be sure to take a look at our Historical Photo Collection which consists of approximately 4300 photographs of West Vancouver, dating from 1890. Here you can find photographs of Lions Gate Bridge construction, West Vancouver's founding families, and your favourite neighbourhoods as they looked in the past. Hardcore historians might also be interested in our small collection of newsletters from various West Vancouver groups and societies, as well as council meeting minutes from as far back as 1912. To Arms! The Library is thrilled to host a talk by Robert Watt, retired Chief Herald of Canada. Robert promises to slay the myth of the family crest and explain how to find real heraldry and to establish your right to historic arms. What is heraldry, you ask? It is the study, design, and regulation of "armorial bearings", more commonly known as coats of arms. A coat of arms is registered to a person, organization or family and uses creativity and artistry to combine a long-established library of symbolic devices in a meaningful manner. Heraldry has been described as "the shorthand of history" and "the floral border in the garden of history." To learn more, and maybe even get started on the design of your very own heraldic arms, please join us Friday, April 11 from 10 am to 12 noon in the Peter J. Peters Room. Admission is free and seating is first-come, first-served. For more information, call the Reference Desk at 604-925-7405 or email info@westvanlibrary.ca. www.westvanlibrary.ca
