Harry Greenwood, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board The Book of Remembrance The West Vancouver Memorial Library became the official war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the Second World War as a result of a municipal referendum held on December 13, 1947. The municipality donated the land opposite the Memorial Arch and the $19,500 needed to construct the building was raised through donations. Much of the work was done by West Vancouver contractors who volunteered their time. Today the Library has gone through numerous expansions. The Library is home to the beautiful hand-illuminated Book of Remembrance. It was created for the opening on November 11, 1950 by West Vancouver artist Marion Morham Grigsby. The book sits to the right of the front door still in its original wood and glass lectern. While the book has remained the same, the world of technology has changed around it. Today, the contents of the book have been reproduced on the Legion's website http://www.westvan60.com/. Over the coming year, the Library and the Legion plan to work together to digitize the actual illuminated pages of the book and develop a webpage for it that can be linked to the websites of both organizations. November is the time we remember those who fell in service to our country. Next time you visit the Library take a minute to look at the Book of Remembrance.
