West Vancouver Memorial Library · The Inquiring Mind And Just in Case You Thought It Was All Online... There is still amazing information coming out in reference books. Reference Librarian Emily Wong shares some of her favourites among our newest additions... New Dictionary of the History of Ideas What do Anarchism and International Order have in common? They are both featured in the fabulous New Dictionary of the History of Ideas. From War to Peace, from Love to Hate, and everything else in between, this 6-volume set covers all sorts of ideas and movements. The essays in this work are thorough - origins, history, cultural and global perspectives, and major figures are all discussed. Some entries include illustrations, especially handy when you are pulling out your hair trying to find examples of propaganda posters (or is this just me?). Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion Do you tend to mix up your Valentino and Versace? Yes? Then you should seriously consider taking a look at the Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion. It not only includes the current fashion powerhouses such as Gucci and Prada, it also has entries on ethnic clothing, historical clothing, specific articles of clothing (the Hawaiian Shirt, the Burqa), and styles of clothing (Grunge, Heroin Chic). As for you fashionphobes, remember this quote from Mark Twain - "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." Hislop's Art Sales Index 2007 Looking to pick up a Picasso? You may first want to take a look at Hislop's Art Sales Index Here you will find the price and details of works of art sold at public auction around the world. The cheapest Picasso sold last season, by the way, cost $440,000 US. The most expensive? Dora Maar au Chat sold for a cool $85,000,000 US. Is Emily Carr more your thing? Then check out the Canadian Art Sales Index. She's a bargain in comparison. Debrett's Correct Form If you're sending a Christmas card to the Queen, make sure you check with Debrett's before heading to the mailbox. Debrett's Correct Form provides proper forms of address for the rest of the Royal Family and the Peerage, as well as for more common folk in the fields of academics, government, law, medicine, religion and the armed forces. My favourite section is the Pronunciation of Titles and Surnames - who knew I had been mispronouncing Bellingham for all these years? Next time you're shopping across the border, say "Bellingjam" or "Bellingum" and dazzle your friends with your savoir faire! Encyclopedia of Politics: The Left and the Right seemed wrong to the editors of The Encyclopedia of Politics: The Left and the Right put Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. in the same pages with the likes of Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. To rectify this, they decided to divide the encyclopedia Volume 1: The Left and Volume 2: The Right. OK, I made that up, but this unique is, in fact, divided into both ends of the political spectrum. Thus, you will Gandhi, communism, and gun control hanging out in The Left, and Sir Winston fascism, and globalization commingling in The Right.
