The Inquiring Mind In addition, because of generous bequests from patrons which enable us to add treasures to the trove, we have taken time to improve the following areas: Music books and CDs, always a strength in this library Science books, where new information is always emerging Audiobooks, quickly becoming a very popular collection Health and medicine, where we are judiciously applying the standards of the Canadian Medical Association to ensure timeliness and accuracy of the information in the collection Fiction and Mysteries, two of our most heavily-used collections. Keeping up with the latest publications means that we must make room on the shelves. Librarians call this weeding - we pull out books that were useful once, but now are crowding the shelves. Don't worry - we carefully consider the merits of every book. If we think they may be needed in the future, we can send a limited number of these books to our Storage area, easily retrievable when they are asked for. If they must be discarded, The Friends of the Library then sell them in semi-annual sales or on the booksale cart. So the next time you see your friendly librarian at the Information Desk with a truckload of tatty books and piles of books all over the desk, you will realize they are collection building! Friday Night Concert News The North Shore Celtic Ensemble performed a Welcome to the Fall concert on Sept. 22, marking the beginning of the Library's third concert season. Inspired by a month at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, their program was a wonderful combination of traditional and West Coast Celtic. These teenage musicians and their directors Claude Giguere and Jay Knudson are clearly at the top of their form. Next up, Vancouver's Trio Accord will perform the Bach Goldberg Variations in a transcription for strings, November 24. This will be a treat for classical music lovers, and a wonderful opportunity for anyone to hear an important piece of the classical repertoire Grove Music Online describes as "a work that outshines all others as far as performing technique is concerned". There will be a pre-concert demonstration of Naxos and Classical Music Libraries, music you can access through the library on your home computer. vvww.westvanlibrary.ca
