Obviously, librarians order books they read about in reviews and publishers' announcements. And our patrons On October 14 , the Library and the Legion rededicated the Library in a ceremony held in front of the Library. The impetus for this was the relocation of the original dedication plaque to a more prominent location in front of the Library. On this occasion it is good to remember the history behind the dedication and the Library's name. It is called the West Vancouver Memorial Library and it is the community's memorial to the men and women of West Vancouver who served and died in World War II. It was selected as the memorial in a referendum on December 13, 1947. In the election, the Library edged out two other proposals, a Community Centre and further development of the Memorial Garden from World War I. The Library was completed and dedicated on November 11, 1950. In their brief to the War Memorial Committee, the West Vancouver Library Committee proposed the following requirements for a memorial: • It should be appropriate to the cause for which our men and women made the supreme sacrifice • It should be a living memorial, i.e., fulfill a useful function within the community • It should be permanent Today, the Library continues to meet all of these requirements and stands as a commitment to freedom of information for our community. What goes into making a great library collection? Like many things you may never have thought about, collection management is quite complex and requires skill, training and experience. Obviously, librarians order books they read about in reviews and publishers' announcements. And our patrons tell us about new books they are interested in. Did you know that you can make these suggestions in person at an Information Desk or in our online catalogue? We also make daily note of gaps in our collections when patrons ask questions for which we do not have adequate, up-to-date materials. Using a more scientific approach, we analyse our holdings and circulation statistics, looking for strengths and weaknesses. Each year we identify areas that need attention. This year the librarians in the Adult Department have given special attention to improving the Biography, Gardening and Science Fiction collections. www.westvanlibrary.ca
