West Vancouver Memorial Library Summer 2006 - Issue 11 The Inquiring Mind SUMMER READING CLUBS 2006 We expect to be EXTREMELY busy this summer when we offer three reading clubs for kids! 1 Extreme Reading is a club designed for readers from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Weekly programs will include a Mountain Biking demonstration, a hands-on African drumming session, and an Extremely Gross & Ghastly Event. Achievement Medals will be presented at a Medal Presentation Ceremony in September to those children who have kept track of reading at least 15 minutes a day for 50 days during the summer. 2. Kick Back with a Book, the teen club, is open to students entering Grade 8 - 12 in September 2006. Registration, booklists, a discussion forum and weekly draws will all be online at www. teensrc.ca. Fill out a ballot in the library to be eligible to win more great prizes. 3. A Read-To-Me Club is for preschoolers and non-readers with its own booklet, bookmark and stickers. All Summer Reading Clubs are free of charge and will run from July 4 to August 31 on a drop-in basis. Registration started Monday, June 19 at the Information Desk in the Youth Department. Extreme Reading and Kick Back with a Book are provincial clubs, sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association and the Public Library Services Branch of the provincial government. From the Director of Library Services Ann Goodhart You have probably noticed that the Library has a new sign on Marine Drive. After many years of pruning back the bushes so the old sign would show, the new one is a great addition. The old sign has been removed and we will be painting and making some changes to the landscaping in the near future. In case you missed it, the old sign was well above eye level on the outside wall of the parking deck. In addition, we are widening the sidewalk between the front patio and the corner of 20th Street. This will require the removal of some of the plants along that wall of the Library. This project includes a lot of help from the Engineering and Parks Departments. The wider sidewalk will make it easier for people with strollers and wheelchairs to navigate down from 20th Street. The revitalized front patio, new entrance, new sign and the improved sidewalk make the Library more accessible and a lovely place to sit on a sunny summer day. www.westvanlibrary.ca tel. 604.925.7400 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, BC, V7V 1J8
