The Vancouver Opera Touring Ensemble's performance of Naomi's Road has been rescheduled for March 4 at 7:00 p.m. Mark your calendar as free tickets will be available at the Information Desk beginning February 4, 2006. You won't want to miss this newly commissioned opera. Intended for young people, Naomi's Road is based on Joy Kogawa's novel about a nine-year-old girl's journey with her Japanese Canadian family from Vancouver to an internment camp in the interior of B.C. during World War II. Award-winning concert and film composer Michael Conway Baker, 0. B. C., started our music programming for the Fall on November 4. His talk on "The Classical Composer in Hollywood" included tales of harrowing experiences with two major film studios, illustrated with fascinating film clips. Music at the Library programming is funded by the Robert Leslie Welsh bequest. From the Chief Librarian Ann Goodhart West Vancouver Memorial Library has a new logo. It was selected after a lot of thought by a committee of staff and board and adopted by the Library Board on September 21. Why a new logo? The stained glass window has served as our logo for the past six years. It is a glorious piece of art and enhances the Library with its beauty but it has never been a successful logo. It does not reduce well and looks very poor in black and white. In addition, it is very expensive to reproduce due to the number of colours. The committee set out to select a logo that would work well in a multitude of uses including the website and children's programs and be flexible and adaptable. We wanted something that spoke of the Library as a cornerstone of the community: a place of ideas and resources; a place whose contents flowed out into the community and enriched lives. The new logo that has been selected may be controversial. It does not include a picture of a book or wave. It is meant to be symbolic and to mean different things to different people just as the Library does. I see the square representing the Library as a place - strong and solid, a cornerstone of the community. The solid walls of place are broken by the flow of things in and out-people, books, ideas, electronic information and much more. Below is our new logo. You will see it appearing in coming months on our publications, signs and website. www.westvanlib.org tel. 604.925.7400 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver BC V7V 1J8
