West Vancouver Memorial Library Bernhard Lauser, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board Library Holds All-Candidates Meetings On Friday, April 29th, and Friday, May 13th, the Library held 2 non-partisan all-candidates meetings for the ridings of West Vancouver-Garibaldi and West Vancouver-Capilano. In addition, the Library sponsored two programs on the Single Transferable Vote referendum. The first, on May 4th, was co-hosted with the West Vancouver Seniors' Centre and held at the Centre. The second was a "Referendum Dialogue" held as one of the Library's ongoing Philosophers' Cafe discussion groups. While this was a new type of initiative for the Library, we felt that all of these events fit well within the Library's role to inform and educate the community and serve as a centre for dialogue about ideas and issues that are important to all of us. All events were non-partisan and the questions covered a broad spectrum of topics. The all-candidates Meetings were well received with 75 to 80 people attending each meeting. Over the past several years, the Library has substantially expanded its programming for adults. The number of these programs increased almost 800% between 2000 and 2004. From our early programs, which focused on author readings, we have expanded to add our concert series, Philosophers' Cafe discussion groups and a growing number of informational and instructional programs. To see what is coming up, pick up a monthly calendar in the Library or go online and check our website at www.westvanlib.org. Bernie Lauser, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board We Had a Painting Party! Students from Chartwell School painted a bright landscape on the hoarding in front of the Library on Saturday, May 14th. They had been painting plywood figures at their school and these were attached later to the landscape they painted on the 14th. West Vancouver businessman Joe Waibel made the arrangements with help from Chartwell teacher Judy Adair. General Paint donated the paint. Comments from our patrons have been very positive. Our thanks to everyone! Muriel Whitlock Retires We will all miss Muriel, who retires this July. Muriel has worked for the Library since 1989 in various jobs, including taking library services out in the community on the Bookmobile. More recently, Muriel has worked in the Youth Department. Patrons and staff alike will miss the gentle humour and fun that Muriel has brought to storytime and puppet shows. Countless young patrons have had the good fortune of being introduced to the Library through Muriel's storytimes both in the Library and at Gleneagles Community Centre. We all wish you a wonderful retirement Muriel!
