West Vancouver Memorial Library · Summer 2005 · Issue 8 Inquiring Mind The BOOKtopia artwork is by award-winning illustrator Marie-Louise Gay. Marie-Louise was a West Vancouver resident during the 1960s. The humorous, vibrantly illustrated story, Rainy Day Magic, is based on the things she and her sister used to do on rainy days in West Vancouver. Her many delightful picture books, including a series featuring a feisty character named Stella, are perfect read-alouds for 4 to 8 year olds. In the year 2000, Marie-Louise learned that the West Vancouver Memorial Library was celebrating its 50th anniversary. When asked to share her favourite Library memory, impression or story, she contributed the following: "Congratulations on your 50th Anniversary! I spent every single Saturday afternoon from I960 to 1963 reading and choosing books in West Vancouver Memorial Library. Still a bookworm after all these years. Marie-Louise Gay" (author-illustrator). Along with these kind words, Marie-Louise sent us two original illustrations. When we contacted her in 2004 to ask if we could use them on our BOOKtopia publicity, readily agreed and even designed a black and white version of the aviator cat to serve as our logo. We are fortunate to have such a talented illustrator as part of the BOOKtopia team. From the Chief Librarian Ann Goodhart This summer at the Library will be exciting as we watch the changes to the building take shape. One of the most exciting projects is the new program room for children. As much as we are looking forward to having room to expand seating in the Youth Department, it is also tinged with sadness. The Story House will be coming down. Over the past decade thousands of young people have listened to stories, enjoyed puppet shows, created craft projects and studied after school in this room. The Story House was constructed with volunteer help including past Board members who helped stain the siding. Robert Florian of our staff did the artwork. The generous hearth of his trompel'oeil fireplace provided a perch for mothers watching their children's faces light up as they listened to stories and learned finger plays from our talented staff. The larger teen and picture book areas will benefit the youth in our community . Saying goodbye to the spaces we have outgrown will in the end be worth it. www.westvan1ib.org tel. 604.925.7400 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver BC V7V 1J8
