West Vancouver Memorial Library Helen Davies, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board The word gift can describe something that is given, as in a present, or suggest a special ability, as in a gifted musician or artist. In my view, the West Vancouver Memorial Library has been endowed with both types of gifts. Over the years we have been the fortunate recipient of donations, as well as benefitted from the generous contributions of many gifted community members who give freely of their expertise and knowledge to help create and sustain this wonderful community facility. In particular, I am impressed constantly by the gift of time that people bestow on the Library. In this increasingly busy world where people face competing pressures and demands on their time, community members willingly make time for the Library, volunteering on the Library Board, the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation Board and with the Friends of the Library. Whether it is the Library Board working to create a Strategic Plan that will serve as a road map and vision for the future, or the Foundation Board organizing the Annual Campaign and the croquet tournament, or the Friends planning the Remembrance Day reception or book sale, everyone generously shares their knowledge and experience and gives their best to help enhance the Library. In addition, there are over 50 other library volunteers, ranging from teenagers to seniors, who participate in the Volunteer Program, labeling and shelving paperback books and participating in special projects. The Teen Advisory Group too meets to provide input and feedback on the library's current teen services, as well as to plan the Library entry in to the Community Day parade. As we know, gifts come in all shapes and sizes; this particular gift of time takes the form of hundreds, likely thousands, of hours donated freely and eagerly to the Library by citizens of West Vancouver. Of course, as with all gifts, this marvellous contribution is welcomed and greatly valued. Exciting Changes Coming Up The Youth Department is busy planning for a bigger and more welcoming space. A new program room, an expanded Teen area and a relocated and bigger picture book section are all part of the vision. Thanks to the Library Foundation and the Patrick bequest for making it possible to translate dreams into reality. In Memory On March 3, 2004 the Head of Library Systems, Roy Hunter, passed away. Roy was not only the heart and soul of the West Vancouver Memorial Library, he was a consummate collector of books and movies. Fortunately for our patrons, Roy bequeathed a fine collection of videos to this Library. The collection includes classic silen films, incredible Chinese horror films, matinee serials and some of the best of film noir. Please help us honour Roy by enjoying this movie legacy.
